His older sister, Brandy, is a recording artist who has earned multiple platinum and multi-platinum albums. In his early years, he relocated from McComb, Mississippi to Los Angeles, California with his family. In 1989, he began starring in television advertisements for a variety of businesses. At the age of eight, in 1989, Norwood started trying out for and starring in television advertisements. From 1993 to 1994, he performed the role of the foster son on The Sinbad Show.

This time in Norwood’s life would have a significant impact on his career as an actor. According to Bradley Torreano of AllMusic, “his easygoing persona and boyish looks attracted to the producers of Brandy’s television program, Moesha, offering him a position on the UPN series as Dorian “D-Money,” a role that he played from 1999 until the show terminated in 2001. He performed the role of Dorian “D-Money” from the time the show began airing in 1999 until it ceased in 2001.

The same year that he secured a record deal with Elektra Records, 1995, he also began recording his debut album, titled Everything You Want. The album was initially published in March of 1997, and it was the lead song “Let It Go” that was featured on the soundtrack for the movie Set It Off. In the United States, “Let It Go” reached its highest position at number 25, while in New Zealand, it peaked at number 11.

The second single reached its highest position on the R&B chart in the United States at number 54. 1997 marked the year that he was released from the label. In 1998, he contributed the song “That’s Why I Lie” to the soundtrack of the film Dr. Dolittle. He worked as a producer for the toy business Mattel, composing the music for a number of commercials and putting together a few demos for his second album.

Ray J and Brandy collaborated on the recording of “Another Day in Paradise,” which went on to become a Top Ten hit in numerous countries, including Austria, the United Kingdom, Germany, Sweden, Switzerland, Belgium, Norway, Ireland, and the Netherlands. In Australia and France, the song peaked at number 11. The song served as the lead single for the R&B/Hip Hop tribute album Urban Renewal, which he co-produced and appeared on as a performer in various songs.

On his second studio album, This Ain’t A Game, Norwood collaborated with a number of notable vocalists and producers, including the Neptunes, Rodney Jerkins, and Lil’ Kim, as well as several others. The album was released on June 26, 2001, by Atlantic Records after being recorded over the course of eighteen months. The lead single “Wait A Minute” reached its highest position on the Hot R&B/Hip-Hop Songs chart at number eight, while it peaked at number thirty on the Billboard Hot 100 chart in the United States. The song “Formal Invite” came in at number 54 on the R&B chart after that.

Norwood went on a hiatus of two years before returning to the recording studio to complete his third studio album, Radiation. He worked with a number of different producers, including Rodney Jerkins, Timbaland, R. Kelly, and Rob Egerton, among others, on the album’s production. After multiple delays, the album was finally released on September 27, 2005, in North America. It was a joint effort between Sanctuary Records and Ray-J’s own label, independent Knockout Entertainment.

The album debuted at number forty-eight on the Billboard 200 list and sold 18,321 copies in its first week of release. The lead single “One Wish” from the album was a top 20 hit in the United States, the United Kingdom, Ireland, and New Zealand. Over 400,000 copies of Radiation were eventually sold within the United States. In 2005, Norwood became a member of the cast of the television show One On One on the UPN network. There, he portrayed the role of D-Mack for the show’s concluding season. On Moesha, Ray played Brandy’s cousin or half-brother, while on One-on-One, he played her brother.
