Filmmaker, producer, journalist, and educator Rebekah McKendry was born on October 10, 1979. McKendry became Fangoria Entertainment’s Director of Marketing in 2005, where she immediately dove into the development and production of new projects. We’ve both been working in terror for close to 16 years. My partner Dave and I got our start in the industry doing music videos and subsequently spent nearly a decade at the fright magazine Fangoria. Dave was a member of our video production team, and I oversaw operations as the company’s executive director of marketing. Dave and I went to Blumhouse after Fangoria for a little exercise. As the site’s editor-in-chief, I oversaw the writing staff and the video content produced by Dave.

I earned my doctorate in horror studies and am now a professor of film studies at the University of Southern California. We have both been raised in horror for the previous two decades, and we love it so much. This is actually a major factor in why we decided to work together. While filming Anton Chekhov’s The Cherry Orchard during our college years, we discovered that we shared a love of obscure films and a shared appreciation for the horror genre. Fear is what united us.

Over the course of several months, we photographed All the Creatures Were Stirring. It’s a horror comedy, so Dave and I knew we wanted to cast people from sitcoms. With that in mind, we got to work on the casting, with the initial two additions being Jonathan Kite and Amanda Fuller. At the time, Jonathan could be seen on 2 Broke Girls, while Amanda can be seen on Last Man Standing to this day.

Everyone we wanted to collaborate with, including Fresh Off the Boat’s Constance Wu, was busy with bigger projects. Both Graham Skipper and Matt Mercer were working on multiple movies at the time. Consequently, we were afforded a range of options. We either have to shoot everything right now, with the cast we want perhaps unavailable, or we can shoot everything in two weeks like a regular film. Alternatively, we may stagger the shoots to accommodate everyone’s busy schedules, notably those of the actors in the sitcom. It was ultimately decided that this would be the best course of action.

Having decided to do a Christmas anthology, Dave and I got down and drafted about twenty separate scenes for the film. Then we began the process of narrowing it down to the top five, keeping in mind that the final film would be divided into five sections. These were chosen because they were the most dissimilar to one another. We were conscious of the fact that we wanted each one to have an entirely unique atmosphere from the last.

We were also considering what we already had and what we could afford. This one, for example, would have to be shot on an expensive boat in the middle of the ocean, but we only have enough money to film at the office. Examples include similar situations. We had to make a lot of choices, but we had set ourselves up with a wide variety of potential outcomes from the start.
