Robert M. Price Bio, Life, and Career:

The American theologian Robert M. Price (born Robert McNair Price on July 7, 1954) hails from Jackson, Mississippi. For many years, Price was a central figure in H. P. Lovecraft’s studies and fandom as the editor of the journal Crypt of Cthulhu and a series of Cthulhu Mythos anthologies. Price does this in articles that preface each anthology and story, where he explains where Lovecraft got his ideas for his various monsters, motifs, and writing style. For instance, The Cthulhu Cycle traces the octopoid creature Cthulhu back to Alfred, Lord Tennyson’s “The Kraken” (1830) and select sections from Lord Dunsany, while The Dunwich Cycle attributes Lovecraft’s “The Dunwich Horror” to the influence of Arthur Machen.

Price’s birthplace was Jackson, Mississippi in 1954, although he settled in New Jersey in 1964. At Gordon-Conwell Seminary in 1978, he earned a Master of Theological Studies in New Testament. He earned two doctorates, one in Systematic Theology from Drew University in 1981 and another in New Testament from that institution in 1991. He served as pastor of Montclair, New Jersey’s First Baptist Church. His academic experience includes stints as a religion professor at Mount Olive College, a theology professor at Johnnie Colemon Theological Seminary, and a biblical criticism professor at the Center for Inquiry Institute in Amherst, New York.

American New Testament scholar Robert McNair Price (born on July 7, 1954) challenges the notion that Jesus Christ ever lived (the Christ myth theory). Johnnie Colemon Theological Seminary hired him as a professor of theology and religious studies. Several publications on biblical studies and the historical Jesus are his work, and he teaches at the Center for Inquiry Institute as a professor of biblical criticism.

Price edited the majority of Chaosium’s early Cthulhu publications, beginning with The Hastur Cycle, a collection of short stories that chronicled the evolution of a single Lovecraftian element, and continuing with Mysteries of the Worm, a compilation of Robert Bloch’s Mythos fiction.

Former Baptist clergyman who oversaw the journal from its inception in 1994 until its demise in 2003. Mystic Rhythms: The Philosophical Vision of Rush, a book on the band Rush, was written by him and his wife, Carol Selby Price.

When discussing mythical figures like Heracles, classical historians, as noted by Price, rejected supernatural narratives while steadfastly presuming that “a genuine historical figure” could be identified as the foundation of the legend. He labels this philosophy as “Euhemerism” and claims that the majority of current studies on Jesus’s life follow this methodology. Like other ancient mythical figures, Jesus, according to Price, seems to have had no banal, secular knowledge about his life preserved. Therefore, Jesus must also be considered a mythical figure, though Price acknowledges some doubt in this aspect. At the end of his book, Deconstructing Jesus, published in 2000, he argues, “There may have been a real figure there, but there is simply no longer any way of being sure.”

His arguments against the historical Jesus’ resurrection were presented in a 1999 debate with William Lane Craig. He argued against the Bible’s credibility in a 2010 debate with James White. A debate between him and Douglas Jacoby titled “Jesus: Man, Myth, or Messiah?” took place in 2010. Jesus’ historicity was the subject of a 2016 discussion between him and New Testament scholar Bart Ehrman.

Price rejects a literal interpretation of the Bible in favor of a more skeptical and humanistic view of Christianity. Deconstructing Jesus, The Incredible Shrinking Son of Man, Jesus Is Dead, and The Christ-Myth Theory and Its Problems (2012) are only a few of Price’s writings that raise doubts about Jesus’ historical existence.

He was featured in the 2005 documentary The God Who Wasn’t There, directed by Brian Flemming, is the focus of Joseph Nanni’s “The Gospel According to Price,” and is included in both the documentary Batman & Jesus and the comedy series Holy Shit, both directed by Jozef K. Richards.

Price hosts a radio show called “Ask the Bible Geek,” in which he fields inquiries from listeners. After D. J. Grothe stepped down as host of Point of Inquiry.
