Robert Reich Bio, Life and Career:
In addition to his expertise in economics, American economist Robert Reich is widely respected for his insightful analysis of pressing political matters. Throughout his career, he has worked for three different presidents: Jimmy Carter, Bill Clinton, and Gerald Ford.
Reich’s birthday is June 24 and he was born in Scranton, Pennsylvania. He started his schooling at New York’s John Jay High School and continued it at Dartmouth.
In 1968, Reich graduated from the institute with an A.B. summa cum laude and went on to study politics, economics, and philosophy at Oxford University on a Rhodes Scholarship. Instead of serving in Vietnam, Reich decided to pursue a law degree at Yale, where he eventually earned his J.D. and was appointed editor of the university’s famed Yale Law Journal. Reich was fortunate enough to attend college with future world leaders including Bill Clinton, Clarence Thomas, and Hilary Clinton.
With an emphasis on jobs, the global economy, and related concerns, Reich rose to prominence in the early 1980s as a public “policy entrepreneur,” a passionate supporter and popularizer of economic policy ideas through public appearances, papers, and books. Generally speaking, he was in line with the neoliberal ideology, which combines a belief in government control and some level of social support with a fundamental dependence on markets and free trade to generate economic progress.
By the time he was appointed secretary of labor, he had abandoned his support for a state-wide industrial policy that would steer investment toward specific sectors in favor of education and retraining as a means of adjusting the American workforce to a global economy whose conditions are determined by largely unchecked multinational corporate activities. Even though he tried to get the administration to take seriously the issues of economic insecurity on which it had been elected—such as sweatshops, child labor, minimum wages, worker safety, and pensions—his influence waned as Clinton shifted to the center and right after the 1994 congressional elections. Since Reich believes that manufacturing jobs are being lost everywhere due to automation and that the benefits of cheaper products will generate more American jobs in the long term, he argued against any move to keep American manufacturing jobs from being exported offshore.
Robert Reich, Clinton’s Secretary of Labor from 1993 to 1997, is now the Chancellor’s Professor of Public Policy at the University of California, Berkeley. Reich, who first met Bill Clinton when they were both 22, gives an insider’s viewpoint on Clinton’s work ethic, political life, and administration in this interview for the film.
Both Bill Clinton and I had the good fortune to receive the Rhodes Scholarship, and back in those days, all of the Rhodes Scholars took a boat to Oxford to meet acquainted. And the prospect of the trip had seemed intriguing prior to departure. The North Atlantic can be rough, however, in the month of October, when those voyages were undertaken. And I became quite seasick, so much so that I went to my cabin, convinced that I would never be able to leave it again.
After leaving the pier, there was a knock at the door, and when I opened it, there stood a tall, lanky man I’d only briefly met. And he added, “I’m Bill Clinton, and I hear you weren’t feeling very well,” while offering up a bowl of chicken soup and some crackers. Rather than express sympathy, he stayed silent. As it turned out, that happened later. We did, however, start talking to one another. Because of my illness, we became fast friends and stayed that way for the following 40 or 50 years.
