Ron Paul Bio, Life, and Career:

American politician known by his nickname Ron Paul, born Ronald Ernest Paul on August 20, 1935, in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania; he was a member of the Republican Party and a contender for the Libertarian Party’s presidential nomination in 1988. Subsequently, in 2008 and 2012, he ran for the Republican presidential nomination.

Paul spent his childhood on a dairy farm his family owned outside of Pittsburgh. In 1957, he graduated with a bachelor’s degree in biology from Gettysburg College, and in 1961, he received his medical degree from Duke University in Durham, North Carolina. Later in his career, he became a flight surgeon with the United States Air Force and the Air National Guard. In 1968, Paul relocated his obstetrics and gynecology business to Brazoria County, Texas, where he has since found great success.

It was President Richard M. Nixon’s decision to end the Bretton Woods monetary system in 1971 that ultimately prompted Paul to enter politics. Paul was concerned that the United States economy would collapse if the remaining vestiges of the gold standard were abandoned. Paul lost his first bid for Congress in 1974, but his opponent resigned before the end of the term, and Paul was subsequently elected in a special election to serve out the remainder of the term. In the ensuing general election, he was unsuccessful, but two years later he was successful in regaining the seat.

In 1984, he decided not to run for reelection and instead unsuccessfully sought the Republican candidacy for the United States Senate. A former Republican, he switched parties and ran for president as a Libertarian in 1988, where he received more than 430,000 votes. After leaving the House in 1993, he returned in 1997 as a Republican, although his votes were frequently at odds with those of his party, such as when he opposed the authorization of the Iraq War and the USA Patriot Act in the early 2000s.

Throughout his run for president, Paul maintained a libertarian ethos throughout his program. The plan prioritized free-market economics, a drastic reduction in government size, stronger protections for personal privacy, and less involvement by the United States in international organizations. Having won a pitiful number of delegates, he suspended his run for president in June 2008 and instead established a political action organization called Campaign for Liberty. Paul, a popular figure in the Tea Party movement, established an exploratory committee in April 2011 to weigh the pros and cons of a third presidential candidacy.

It was the following month before he made his official announcement. Paul declared he wouldn’t run for a 13th term in Congress in July 2011 so he could devote more time to his presidential campaign. Despite having a passionate and active following, Paul chose to focus his campaigning efforts on only a few states. In January 2012, one of his better finishes was a close second in New Hampshire. Several more close elections resulted in second-place finishes for him before he declared in May that he would not be running in the remaining states. On election night, Paul said he thought the only winner would be the status quo, despite the fact that he had not endorsed the Republican nominee, Mitt Romney. He left Congress in January 2013 when he was 77 years old.

Paul opened his own medical practice in Bowling Green, Kentucky, after spending roughly 15 years in various partnerships and clinics. In 1997, he left the American Board of Ophthalmology, the medical board responsible for certification in his area, and established the National Board of Ophthalmology as a competitor. That organization, whose board consisted solely of his relatives, dissolved in 2011. His involvement in the Lions Club International, which operates eye banks and provides humanitarian relief relating to eye care on a global scale, was another highlight of his life.

Paul’s father ran for president of the United States in 1988 on the Libertarian Party ticket, and while in college Paul was active in various conservative organizations and helped his father’s campaign. Kentucky Taxpayers United, which Paul created and led, is an anti-tax organization. Two years later, when the elder Paul decided to run for Congress again after an absence of more than a decade, with his son’s assistance, he was able to defeat an “establishment” Republican candidate.

In 2009, Rand Paul launched his candidacy for the seat held by the unpopular incumbent Senator Jim Bunning of Kentucky, capitalizing on a surge of anti-Washington feelings. After Bunning dropped out of the contest, the Republican primary went to Paul, who was supported by the Tea Party. Despite the controversy surrounding a speech Paul made on the campaign trail questioning the validity of the Civil Rights Act of 1964, he went on to win the general election in 2010 by a wide margin, handily defeating the Democratic candidate.

The proceedings then moved to the Republican-controlled Senate, and Paul made headlines by releasing the claimed whistleblower’s name, despite a provision protecting the person’s identity. Paul voted for Trump’s acquittal in the near party-line vote that occurred in February 2020.

The coronavirus pandemic reached epidemic proportions at this time. The closing of schools and companies contributed to an economic downturn in the United States that was comparable to that of the Great Depression. After Paul tested positive for the virus in March 2020, he was the first senator to voluntarily enter self-quarantine. He went back to his official job the next month. In November of 2022, Paul was re-elected to serve a third term.
