In addition, she was a co-creator, director, and co-writer for the television series Creamerie, which debuted in 2021.
Liang’s parents are originally from Hong Kong, however, they settled in New Zealand. Liang was the top student at St. Cuthbert’s College in Auckland in 1995, where he studied and graduated. After that, she attended the University of Auckland to pursue a degree in computer science. In 2003, she received her Master of Arts degree with a concentration in Creative and Performing Arts.
Liang made her debut as a director with the autobiographical documentary film Banana in a Nutshell (2005), which was about her personal cross-cultural romance with a Pkeh. The film was about her own experience. At the DOCNZ International Documentary Film Festival, the film was awarded the prize for Best Documentary. At the Asian Festival of First Films, Liang was awarded the prize for Best Director of Documentary Films. The documentary was shown at the New Zealand International Film Festival in 2005, where she met John Barnett, a producer from South Pacific Pictures who requested a feature-length adaptation of the documentary.
That project was eventually adapted into the romantic comedy My Wedding and Other Secrets, which was released in 2011. At the Aotearoa Film & Television Awards, the movie took home both the award for Best Actress and the award for Best Screenplay for a Feature Film. Roseanne Liang, the third and youngest child of Hong Kong emigrants, had every intention of following in her older sisters’ footsteps and studying medicine. But Liang changed her mind about becoming a doctor in order to focus on a career in filmmaking after her siblings suggested that she delay her plans for a year in order to experiment with other fields of study.
Liang attended Auckland University, where she majored in both science and the arts, and it was there that she began her filmmaking career in 1998. Her short film “Filmworthy” ended up winning the TV2 Young Filmmaker Prize in the year 2001. Liang’s love story “Henchman,” which she directed in 2003, served as the thesis project for her Master of Creative and Performing Arts degree. It was chosen to screen at the Sydney Film Festival in 2003 as well as the London Film Festival. She began her career as an assistant editor on the adolescent successes Being Eve and Secret Agent Men, and she soon went to cutting TV and commercials.
