Sarah Tuttle Bio, Life, and Career:

Sarah Tuttle is an assistant professor of astrophysics at the University of Washington in addition to her work as an astrophysicist.  Tuttle is responsible for the construction of spectrographs that can detect nearby galaxies. His work has contributed to the study of dark energy using the Visible Integral-field Replicable Unit Spectrograph (VIRUS), which is installed on the Hobby–Eberly Telescope at McDonald Observatory. FIREBall (Faint Intergalactic medium Redshifted Emission Balloon) is the world’s first fiber-fed ultraviolet spectrograph. Tuttle was born and raised in Santa Cruz, attended the University of California, Santa Cruz for his physics education, and received his Bachelor of Science degree there in the year 2001.

She worked as a research scientist with Add-Vision in Scotts Valley from 2001 to 2002 and was a member of the team that constructed the first screen-printed polymer light-emitting diodes during that time period.  She worked there. Tuttle graduated with a Master of Science and a Master of Philosophy in the field of astronomy from Columbia University in 2006 and 2007, respectively. She then went on to earn her Doctor of Philosophy degree in 2010 by collaborating with David Schiminovich on the Faint Intergalactic medium Redshifted Emission Balloon project (FIREBall).

Tuttle is credited with having constructed the world’s first fiber-fed ultraviolet spectrograph, which was deployed aboard FIREBall in the year 2009. The research conducted by Tuttle uses innovative hardware approaches to create spectrograph instrumentation. This research is specifically aimed at isolating the role that emission and infall from the interstellar medium play in the regulation of star formation in galaxies.FIREBall is a balloon-borne telescope that is attached to an ultraviolet spectrograph and is designed to discover the intergalactic medium (IGM) in emission.

During the time that Tuttle was working on her Ph.D. at Columbia, she constructed the spectrograph for FIREBall.Tuttle’s FIREBall spectrograph, which was the world’s first fiber-fed UV spectrograph and set upper limitations on IGM emission, was the first instrument of its kind to be constructed. The nine VIRUS spectrograph modules created by Tuttle are currently undergoing testing in preparation for later installation on the Hobby Eberly Telescope. Between the years 2010 and 2012, Tuttle was the lead for the VIRUS detector at the Hobby–Eberly Telescope. In this role, she was responsible for prototyping, finalizing, and characterizing the VIRUS spectrograph.

The device has 156 spectroscopic channels that are covered by 34944 fiberoptic channels and have a field of view that is 22 arcminutes in diameter.  The astrophysical research that Tuttle and her colleagues are currently conducting uses VIRUS data. Her appointment as an assistant professor at the University of Washington began in the year 2016. As of the month of May 2019, Tuttle was acting as the project manager for the Apache Point Observatory’s recommissioning of the KOSMOS spectrograph. This equipment had previously been housed at the Kitt Peak Observatory.

Her contributions to the public’s understanding of science have included guest spots on the podcast 365 Days of Astronomy in 2009 and articles written for The Toast in 2014. She is frequently quoted as an astronomy expert in pieces published in Gizmodo, The Mercury News, and The Seattle Times. Her selection as a Kavli Fellow by the National Academy of Sciences came about in the year 2014.
