Shakira Isabel Mebarak Ripoll born 2 February 1977) is a performer from Colombia who also writes songs. She was born and reared in Barranquilla, and she is renowned for her musical variety as well as the title of “Queen of Latin Music.” She has been given this title.
At the age of thirteen, she made her debut as a recording artist with Sony Music Colombia. After her first two albums, Magia (1991) and Peligro (1993), were not successful commercially, she rose to notoriety in Hispanic countries with her subsequent albums, Pies Descalzos (1995) and Dónde Están los Ladrones? (1998). She made her debut in the English-speaking market with her fifth studio album, Laundry Service (2001), which went on to sell more than 13 million copies around the world.
Her status as a top crossover artist was catapulted as a direct result of the success of her singles “Whenever, Wherever” and “Underneath Your Clothes,” which were both released internationally. Shakira was referred to as a “pioneer” by Broadcast Music, Inc., and she is credited with expanding the global reach of Latino vocalists. Her success was further cemented by the Spanish albums Fijación Oral, Vol. 1 (2005), Sale el Sol (2010), and El Dorado (2017). All three of these albums topped the Billboard Top Latin Albums list and were certified diamond (Latin) by the Recording Industry Association of America.
Her success was further cemented by the Spanish albums Fijación Oral, Vol. 1 (2005), Sale el Sol (2010), and El Dorado (2017). In the meantime, her English albums Oral Fixation, Vol. 2 (2005), She Wolf (2009), and Shakira (2014) have all been certified gold, platinum, or multi-platinum in a variety of countries throughout the world. During seasons two and three (2013–2014) of the American singing competition television series The Voice, she was a coach on the show.
Shakira is one of the most successful musicians of all time, as she has sold over 95 million records from her discography of 145 tracks, making her one of the best-selling artists in the history of music. According to Billboard, as of the year 2023, she is the female Latin musician that has had the most record sales overall. She is acknowledged for being the one who made it possible for other Latin musicians to break into the international market.
She has been honored with a wide variety of accolades, including three Grammy Awards, twelve Latin Grammy Awards, four MTV Video Music Awards, seven Billboard Music Awards, thirty-nine Billboard Latin Music Awards, twenty-one Guinness World Records, and a star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame. She was recognized by Billboard as the top female Latin artist of the decade not once, but twice, in the 2000s and again in the 2010s.
In recognition of her charitable efforts through the Barefoot Foundation as well as her contributions to the music industry, she was awarded the Latin Recording Academy Person of the Year award in 2011 as well as the Harvard Foundation Artist of the Year honor. In 2011, she was given a position on the President’s Advisory Commission on Educational Excellence for Hispanics in the United States, and in 2012, the French government made her a Chevalier of the Order of Arts and Letters. She is her parents, William Mebarak Chadid and Nidia Ripoll Torrado’s one and only offspring. She has both Spanish and Lebanese ancestry in her family tree.
Her father William was the first member of his family to be born outside of Lebanon. He was born in New York City. His family uprooted and relocated to Colombia when he was just five years old. On her mother’s side of the family, her surnames are Ripoll and Torrado, both of which are Spanish. Ripoll is a Catalan name, and its origins may be traced back to four brothers who traveled from Catalonia to coastal Colombia in the 19th century.
Torrado is a Spanish name. She has also mentioned in interviews that she has distant Italian ancestry through a Pisciotti surname-bearing ancestor in her family tree. She was brought up in the Catholic faith and attended Catholic schools throughout her education. Her father was previously married, thus she has eight older half-siblings from that marriage. Barranquilla is a city located on the northern Caribbean coast of Colombia, and Shakira spent a significant portion of her childhood there.
Shakira was just four years old when she penned her first poem, which she called “La Rosa de Cristal” (which translates to “The Crystal Rose”). She wanted a typewriter as a child since it had always captivated her to watch her father compose stories on a typewriter, and she requested one as a present for Christmas. She was seven years old when she first obtained a typewriter, and she has never stopped writing poems since then.
Songs were subsequently crafted from these poems throughout time. A motorbike accident claimed the life of Shakira’s older half-brother when she was just two years old. Six years later, when Shakira was eight years old, she penned her first song, which was titled “Tus gafas oscuras” (‘Your dark spectacles’), which was inspired by her father, who for years wore dark glasses to mask his sadness. Shakira’s first song was about her father.
She claims that she was also known as “the belly dancer girl” at her previous school because she would perform a number that she had learned every Friday at school. She explains that the experience was how she uncovered her love for live performances. Shakira’s father took her to a nearby park so that she could meet some of the orphans who resided in the area in the hopes of instilling in her a sense of appreciation for her upbringing. The images lingered with her, and she thought to herself, “One day I’m going to help these kids when I become a famous artist.”
