Shankar Vedantam Bio, Life, and Career:

Popular American journalist, scientific correspondent, and author Shankar Vedantam. He comes up with the concept for Hidden Brain and also hosts it. Over three million people are weekly podcast listeners. The Hidden Brain radio program is broadcast on approximately 400 public radio stations in the United States thanks to NPR’s distribution.

In the social sciences and the study of humanity, he excels. His Hidden Brain books, podcasts, and radio appearances have brought him widespread renown. Before becoming NPR’s social science correspondent in 2011, he spent ten years as a reporter for The Washington Post. His tenure with NPR will end in 2020. Between 2007 and 2009, Shankar also contributed to the Washington Post as the author of the Department of Human Behavior column. Shankar is a normal height, standing at 1.70 meters.

The beautiful Ashwini Tambe is Shankar’s wife. A women’s studies assistant professor at the University of Maryland has written about the rise of the Me Too movement and its motivations. Following graduation from high school, Shankar went to India to pursue a bachelor’s degree in electronics engineering. He went on to get his master’s degree in journalism from the prestigious Stanford University in California.

Shankar is the host of the social science-oriented Hidden Brain podcast. More than two million people each week listen to the podcast after hearing it on one of 250 radio stations across the United States. He started it at NPR in 2011, and he planned to stay there until October 2020, at which point he would launch his own service. Presently, Hidden Brain is being produced by Hidden Brain Media. NPR is still airing the first season of the radio show with the same name from 2017.

After finishing high school, Shankar went to India to get a bachelor’s degree in electronics engineering. He went on to get his master’s degree in journalism from the prestigious Stanford University in California. In 2002 and 2003, Vedantam was awarded the Rosalynn Carter Fellowship in Mental Health Journalism; in 2003 and 2004, he was awarded the World Health Organization Journalism Fellowship; and in 2005, he was awarded the Templeton-Cambridge Fellowship on Science and Religion.

During 2009–2010, he was a Nieman Fellow. From 2001 until 2011, he was an employee at The Washington Post, where he contributed columns to the “Department of Human Behavior” from 2007 to 2009. He started working at NPR back in 2011. He presently contributes to Slate with a piece titled “Hidden Brain” (magazine). To “show the unconscious patterns that drive human behavior, the biases that influence our decisions, and the triggers that direct the trajectory of our relationships,” he has been hosting the NPR social sciences program “Hidden Brain” since September 2015.

Vedantam is a multi-genre author who has penned both fiction and nonfiction. In 2004, the Brick Playhouse in Philadelphia staged his farce Tom, Dick, and Harriet, and in 2005, his short story collection The Ghosts of Kashmir was released to the public. In 2010, he released a nonfiction book titled The Hidden Brain: How Our Unconscious Minds Choose Our Leaders, Direct Our Economy, Fight Our Battles, and Protect Our Lives.

Several organizations have recognized Vedantam’s work: the American Public Health Association, the Asian American Journalists Association, the Associated Press Managing Editors of Pennsylvania, the Pennsylvania Newspaper Association, the Society of Professional Journalists, and the South Asian Journalists Association.
