Shannon Sharpe Bio, Life, and Career:

Shannon Sharpe is a former American football player who played as a tight end in the National Football League (NFL) for 14 seasons, primarily with the Denver Broncos. Sharpe was born in the United States on June 26, 1968, and is a former professional football player. He is ranked third all-time among tight ends in receptions, receiving yards, and receiving touchdowns, and is widely considered to be one of the best tight ends of all time.  In addition to that, he was the first tight end in NFL history to accumulate more than 10,000 receiving yards. He is the older brother of Sterling Sharpe, who used to play wide receiver in the NFL.

Sharpe participated in college football at Savannah State before being chosen by the Broncos in the twenty-first round of the NFL Draft in the year 1990. During his time with the Denver Broncos, which included 12 seasons that were not all consecutive, he was selected to seven straight Pro Bowls, received four first-team All-Pro nods, and won two straight Super Bowls. During the time in between his stints with the Broncos, Sharpe played for the Baltimore Ravens for two seasons. During that time, he was selected for an eighth Pro Bowl and won a third Super Bowl title with the Ravens.

Sharpe finished his career as the tight end with the most receptions, receiving yards, and receiving touchdowns in the National Football League (NFL). After his retirement, Sharpe began working as an analyst for The NFL Today on CBS Sports. Since 2016, he has also been co-hosting Skip and Shannon: Undisputed on Fox Sports 1 alongside Skip Bayless. 2011 marked the year that he was inducted into the Pro Football Hall of Fame. Sharpe, who is the younger brother of former NFL star wide receiver Sterling Sharpe, spent his childhood in Glennville, Georgia, where he attended Glennville High School and earned all-state honors as a player in three different sports.

He once made a joke about how poor his family was, saying something along the lines of, “We were so poor, a robber once broke into our house, and we ended up robbing the robber.” He said something to the effect of, “I was a horrible student. I didn’t graduate magna cum laude, I graduated ‘Thank you, Lawdy!'”  He participated in track and field, in addition to playing football and basketball while he was at Savannah State. He participated in events for jumping and throwing in track and field.

From 1987 to 1989, Sharpe was named to the All-Southern Intercollegiate Athletic Conference first team all three years, and in 1987, he was given the SIAC Player of the Year award. In 1989, he was also chosen to be a member of the Kodak Division II All-American team. In 1988 and 1989, he led the Tigers football team to their best records in the history of the program, which were 7–3 and 8–1 respectively. Sharpe had 61 receptions for 1,312 yards and 18 touchdowns during his senior season, including three games in which he had more than 200 receiving yards. Sharpe completed his collegiate playing career with 192 receptions, 3,744 receiving yards, and 40 touchdowns.

In 2009, he was inducted into the Division II Football Hall of Fame. In 2010, he was inducted into the Savannah State athletic Hall of Fame. In 2013, he was inducted into the Black College Football Hall of Fame. Sharpe was not a highly-rated prospect for the NFL Draft in 1990 despite the fact that he had an outstanding career at the college level. Sharpe’s height and weight of 6.2 feet and 230 pounds, combined with the fact that he played college football in Division II, made him an unsuitable candidate for either the position of receiver or tight end. He was ultimately chosen by the Denver Broncos in the seventh round, with the 192nd overall pick in the draught.

After two subpar seasons playing receiver for Denver, during which he caught a total of just 29 passes, the team decided to convert him to a tight end position. This quickly paid off, as Sharpe finished his third season with 53 receptions for passes. He stayed with the Denver Broncos until 1999, during which time he won two championship rings at Super Bowl XXXII and Super Bowl XXXIII.

Following the 1997 season championship, which was his first, he was featured on the box of Wheaties sold by General Mills alongside four other Broncos. After playing for the Baltimore Ravens for two years, during which time he won another championship ring at Super Bowl XXXV, he came back to the Denver Broncos to finish out his career. He continued to perform there until 2003.  After that, he decided to retire and start working as an NFL analyst for CBS.
