Sharmeleon Bio, Life, and Career:
Sharla in Japan was originally given the name Sharla Katalin Hinskens when she entered the world on April 23, 1986, in the city of Victoria in the province of British Columbia, Canada. Sharla Katalin Hinskens, also known as Sharla in Japan and Sharmeleon, is a Canadian YouTuber who currently resides in Japan.
She is most known for her channels on YouTube with the same names, which have a total of 614 thousand and 744 thousand followers, respectively. Even though she has begun to concentrate her efforts on live streaming on one of her channels, she has spent the better part of the past 15 years mostly residing in Japan. On both of her channels, she uploads videos in which she discusses the cuisine, culture, people, and tourist locations of Japan.
In addition to teaching English and working as a translator in the past, Sharla has also translated subtitles for a number of movies, including Shin Godzilla and Terra Formars. In addition, she has collaborated on the promotion of regional specialties with the governments and organizations of several localities. Her boyfriend and she have worked together on the Journey Across Japan series that he is writing. In September 2020, she launched the “Neko Neko Post” service with the intention of selling elegant Japanese stationery.
Sharla in Japan was asked to keep a blog of her experiences while attending university in Tokyo. However, because she was “absolutely horrible at writing,” she opted to make movies about her time in Japan rather than keeping a written journal for the assignment. She began by using the webcam on her laptop to record herself delivering “boring” monologues in which she discussed her experiences as a student and various other topics that she found engaging.
In December 2010, she established the YouTube channel that is now known as Sharla in Japan, and on September 8, 2011, she published the first video associated with the channel, titled University Exchange in Japan. In the video, she attempted to speak Japanese in order to hone her skills in the language, but she eventually switched to making movies in English instead.
She was taken aback to see that her videos were gaining the attention of people she didn’t know, which inspired her to improve the overall quality of her videos and provide more information about the culture, cuisine, and travel opportunities available in Japan through her videos. In May 2013, she launched a second channel on YouTube under the name Charmander.
After garnering more than 500,000 subscribers, the channel was rebranded as Sharmeleon. It later became her primary channel for providing videos about her life in Japan, including videos about food, toys, travel, and beauty; meanwhile, her original channel is primarily utilized for content related to living streaming. She has a sister who has made an appearance in some of her videos on YouTube. At the age of 17, she participated in a cultural exchange between the sister cities of Victoria and Morioka in Japan.
During that time, she studied Japanese as a third language in school and traveled to Japan for the first time. Two years later, when she was in the middle of obtaining her business degree in Canada, she became restless and decided to travel back to Japan to put her Japanese language skills to use. Before moving back to Canada in 2010 to complete her education, she worked as an English teacher and in a variety of other occupations over the previous three years.
However, after the Thoku earthquake struck Japan in 2011, she felt so concerned about her friends there that she ultimately made the decision to leave her studies behind and relocate back to Japan. When she first began posting videos on YouTube in 2011, she was enrolled full-time at a university in Tokyo, Japan, where she was working on a bachelor’s degree in International Communication and Languages. She was also allowed to participate in an exchange program there.
After she graduated, she found employment, but she quit after only six months so that she could devote her entire time to YouTube. She has spent some time in both Tokyo and Chiba, but her true home is Morioka, which is located in the Iwate prefecture. She only recently purchased a home in the Tokyo area. She has also had experiences living in the United Kingdom and South Korea.
Vitiligo is a skin condition that she suffers from, and she just had a tumor removed from her thyroid gland. She ate fish at her grandparents’ house despite the fact that she was raised as a vegetarian, and she only started eating meat recently after claiming that her vegetarian diet made her unattractive to potential business partners.
