Snatam Kaur Khalsa, whose full name is Snatam Kaur Khalsa, was born in Trinidad, Colorado, in 1972. She is a singer, composer, and author in the United States. Kirtan is a sort of new-age Indian devotional music, and Kaur sings it while also traveling the world as an activist for peace.
All female Sikhs are given the surname “Kaur,” which literally translates to “princess.”When Snatam was two years old, her family uprooted and moved to California, where they split their time between Long Beach and Sacramento. Snatam’s family went to India when she was six years old, and while they were there, her mother took kirtan classes.
Snatam relocated to Mill Valley in 1986 after spending his childhood years on a ranch close to Bolinas, California. He had resided there up until the eighth grade. She spent her childhood attending Gurdwaras and other Sikh religious events, where she and her mother would play kirtan together.
She graduated from Tamalpais High School, located in Mill Valley, California. She started writing songs and playing the violin in the school orchestra while she was a student at Tam High. Before Kaur and her classmates sang “Saving the Earth” at an Earth Day event in San Francisco on April 22, 1990, they were taught by Bob Weir of the Grateful Dead. The concert was held in honor of Earth Day.
Snatam was also involved in various social and environmental concerns while she was a student in high school. During her senior year, she served as president of a social action organization that was known as “Students for Justice.” The group was responsible for initiating a campus recycling program and organizing programs to raise awareness about environmental issues.
A speech delivered at the school by Sacheen Littlefeather served as the impetus for the club to lead the charge in 1989 and 1990 to rebrand the school’s athletic teams and mascot as the Red-Tailed Hawk. Previously, the school’s teams were known as the Indians.
Snatam went on to receive a bachelor of science degree in biochemistry at Mills College in Oakland, California, following his graduation from Tam University. After that, she went back to India to learn Kirtan with Bhai Hari Singh, who had been her mother’s instructor. In 1997, Kaur started her career in the food industry with Peace Cereals in Eugene, Oregon, where she worked as a food technologist.
In the year 2000, Kaur got a recording contract with Spirit Voyage Records, and the label’s founder, Guru Ganesha Singh Khalsa, later became her manager and guitar player. Thomas Barquee, a producer of new age music, and Prabhu Nam Kaur Khalsa, her mother, who is also a musician, have both participated in her professional collaborations at various times.
Snatam Kaur spent the better part of each year between 2003 and 2009 participating in an ongoing tour that was known as the “Celebrate Peace tour.” Her tour took her to various different cities around North America, as well as to Europe and South America on two separate occasions each.
As part of the tour, performances were given in a variety of locations, including schools, hospices, juvenile detention centers, and others. The 3HO Foundation is a non-governmental organization that has been linked with the United Nations since 1996.
Kaur is a featured teacher and “Peace Ambassador” for the organization. Snatam Kaur went on tour with a variety of different artists in addition to her lifelong musical companion Guru Ganesha Singh Khalsa, who is both a guitarist and a vocalist. After they got married, Snatam Kaur’s husband, a graphic artist named Sopurkh Singh, began accompanying her on her travels.
