Susie Bright Bio, Life and Career:

Susannah Bright is an American feminist who was born on March 25, 1958. She is a writer, journalist, critic, editor, publisher, producer, and performer whose work frequently focuses on the relationship between politics and sexuality.  She is one of the early writers and campaigners who is known as a sex-positive feminist, and she is the one who will be receiving the Humanist Feminist Award in 2017. Her documents are currently housed in the Human Sexuality Collection at the Cornell University Library, which also houses the archives of the organisation.

On Our Backs. In the 1970s, when Susie Bright was still a teenager, she was active in a variety of progressive causes, including the feminist movement, the civil rights movement, and the anti-war movement. She was the plaintiff in a lawsuit against the Los Angeles Board of Education for the right of minors to disseminate their own publications without prior censorship or clearance. She was a member of the high school underground newspaper known as The Red Tide and served in that capacity. (A ruling that is favourable to the plaintiff.)

Between the years 1974 and 1976, she was a member of the International Socialists and worked as a community and labour organiser in Los Angeles, the San Francisco Bay Area, Detroit, and Louisville, Kentucky. She also spent time in Louisville, Kentucky. She was also a founder member of Teamsters for a Democratic Union and contributed to The Red Tide and Workers’ Power under the alias Sue Daniels, which was a pseudonym. Between the years 1981 and 1986, Bright worked at and managed the feminist sex toy boutique Good Vibrations.

During that time, she was one of the first employees at the company and held the position of manager. In 1981, she attended classes provided by San Francisco Sex Information. She was the first person to write a sex toy catalogue for a female audience from the perspective of a woman, and she did so when she penned the first mail-order catalogue for Good Vibrations. She established the first feminist curation of pornographic films that were available at the time, which was called the Good Vibrations Erotic Video Library.

From 1984 until 1991, Susie Bright was a co-founder and editor of the first women-produced sex magazine, On Our Backs. The journal was described as “entertainment for the adventurous lesbian.”It was here that she first published her advice column under the name “Susie Sexpert.” She compiled all of these pieces and enlarged upon them in order to write her first book, which was titled Susie Sexpert’s Lesbian Sex World and was published in the year 1990. Nothing but the Girl is a collection of lesbian sexual photography that Bright and Jill Posener co-edited and published. The collection includes thirty interviews with the photographers who contributed their work. In 1997, it was recognised with both the Firecracker Award and the Lambda Literary Award.

Herotica was the first women’s erotica book series, and Bright edited the first three volumes. Bright also started the series. In 1993, she launched the series that would go on to become a national bestseller called The Best American Erotica. She worked at the San Francisco Review of Books as a contributing editor and columnist during the years 1992 and 1994. In 1986, Bright became the first woman to join the X-Rated Critics Organization, and in 2005, she was inducted into the XRCO Hall of Fame for her contributions to the 5th Estate. She authored feminist reviews of sexual films for Penthouse Forum between the years 1986 and 1989, during which time she gained the nickname “Pauline Kael of Porn.

She was the first mainstream journalist to cover the adult industry trade, and she was also the first academic to teach about the aesthetics and politics of erotic film imagery. She began her teaching career in 1986 at Cal Arts Valencia and then moved on to the University of California in the early 1990s. Her thoughts on the history of LGBT depictions in cinema are featured in the documentary film The Celluloid Closet, which has received widespread publication of her film evaluations of popular movies.  Additionally, she was included in the documentary film Erotica: A Journey Into Female Sexuality, which was directed by Maya Gallus and released in 1997.
