He lent his voice to Disney’s Big Hero 6 in 2014. During his time at George Washington University, he was a part of the sketch comedy ensemble Recess. In the movie, She’s Out of My League, he played the role of Helpful Stainer, who counseled his friend through his difficulties with women. In 2010, he had frontal lobe surgery to correct an improper link. Morgan, his sister, is also a funny person. In 2014, he proposed to Kate Gorney, and the couple wed a year later in September 2015. In Get Him to the Greek, he co-starred with Jonah Hill and portrayed a minor character.
He is the son of a clinical psychologist and an attorney and was born in Denver under the name Todd Joseph Miller. After graduating from East High, he enrolled at a university in Washington, D.C., where he earned a degree in psychology, much like his mother had done. T.J. graduated from college and immediately traveled to Chicago, where he joined many improv groups. In addition, he began acting in stand-up comedy and went on the road with Chicago’s Second City.
His first acting gig was on the 2007–2008 comedy series Carpoolers, in which he appeared in all 13 episodes. T.J.’s debut acting role was in the 2008 science fiction horror thriller Cloverfield. Next, he appeared in the 2009 comedy The Goods: Live Hard, Sell Hard, alongside Jeremy Piven and Ving Rhames, as Hudson ‘Hud’ Platt, opposite Mike Vogel and Lizzy Caplan. Waiting to Die, a mockumentary TV film he was in in 2009, featured him in a supporting role.
T.J.’s partnership with Jay Baruchel dates back to their 2010 film She’s Out of My League. Down the line, they’d have multiple opportunities to collaborate. That same year, he joined Gerard Butler, Jonah Hill, Kristen Wiig, America Ferrera, and his pal Jay Baruchel in the animated adventure flick How to Train Your Dragon as the voice of dragon slayer Tuffnut. As a result of the success of the film, T.J. was cast in subsequent installments and even appeared on television.
In addition to Gulliver’s Travels, which starred Jack Black, Emily Blunt, and Dan Aykroyd, he also appeared in Get Him to the Greek, starring Russell Brand and Rose Byrne, Unstoppable, starring Denzel Washington and Chris Pine, Yogi Bear, starring Dan Aykroyd and Justin Timberlake, and Gulliver’s Travels. T.J. stayed in the comedy genre in 2011, starring as Billy alongside Paul Rudd and Elizabeth Banks in Our Idiot Brother and guest-starring on an episode of Happy Endings.
T.J. had quite the year in 2012. He co-starred alongside Tom Cruise and Julianne Hough in the musical film Rock of Ages, co-starred with Steve Carell and Keira Knightley in the adventure dramedy Seeking a Friend for the End of the World, and has started filming on two television shows. As of 2014, he had begun doing voice work for Disney’s Emmy-winning series Gravity Falls and had resumed his role as Tuffnet in the Emmy-winning animated series Dragons: Riders of Berk.
For the sequel, T.J. brought back the Tuffnet. The original cast returned for the sequel, along with the addition of Cate Blanchett. Alongside Mark Wahlberg and Stanley Tucci, he played Lucas Flannery in Transformers: Age of Extinction, and in the same year he also voiced a man who forgets to change his underwear frequently in the Oscar-winning animated film Big Hero 6 and co-starred in the comedy Search Party with Thomas Middleditch and Alison Brie.
T.J.’s breakout role came in the 2014 season of the HBO Golden Globe-nominated comedy series Silicon Valley. He appeared alongside Thomas Middleditch and Josh Brener in the role of Erlich Bachman, a slob who thinks he’s a tech superstar but is actually just a pothead. He won the Critics’ Choice Award for Best Supporting Actor in a Comedy Series in 2015 and was nominated again the following year for his outstanding performance.
In an interview with HBO, he said that Erlich’s facial hair was the most unexpected aspect of his Silicon Valley role. He claimed that people’s “overwhelming, polarized ideas” were causing a “rift” in the United States.
In 2015, T.J. reunited America Ferrera and Jay Baruchel as Tuffnut in the animated series Dragons: Race to the Edge. In 2016, he played Ryan Reynolds’ best friend Weasel in the blockbuster hit Deadpool and co-starred with Jason Bateman, Olivia Munn, Jennifer Aniston, and Kate McKinnon in the comedy Office Christmas Party. The plot centers on a group of employees who are determined to throw a Christmas party of epic proportions in order to keep their company afloat.
