Terry Teachout Bio, Life, and Career:

Terrance Alan Teachout was a well-known American author, critic, biographer, playwright, stage director, and librettist. He was born on February 6, 1956, and passed away on January 13, 2022. He was the theatrical critic for The Wall Street Journal, the critic-at-large for Commentary, and the author of “Sightings,” a column in The Wall Street Journal that was published monthly and focused on the arts in the United States. He maintained a blog at About Last Night and wrote on the arts for a variety of other publications, such as The New York Times and National Review. Three in the Aisle was a monthly podcast on theatre in the United States that was broadcast by American Theatre magazine and aired from September 2017 through December 2021.

He served as a co-host on the show from 2017 until 2021. Terrance Alan Teachout was the oldest son of Herbert H. Teachout, a hardware salesman, and Evelyn Teachout (née Crosno), a secretary. Alan Teachout was born on February 6, 1956, in Cape Girardeau, Missouri. His parents were Herbert H. Teachout and Evelyn Teachout. He spent his childhood in the town of Sikeston, Missouri. Teachout went to St. John’s College in Annapolis, Maryland, for one semester before deciding to transfer to another school.

He graduated with a Bachelor of Arts in journalism and music from William Jewell College in Liberty, Missouri, in 1979. From 1983 to 1985, he participated in a graduate psychology program at the University of Illinois Urbana-Champaign; however, he left the university to pursue a career in journalism. Teachout made his home in Kansas City, Missouri, from 1979 until 1983, where he held jobs as a bank teller and as a jazz bassist. During this time, he also contributed articles on music to The Kansas City Star. Teachout left Kansas City in 1983.

After moving to New York City in 1985, Teachout worked as an editor at Harper’s Magazine from 1985 until 1987 and then as an editorial writer for the New York Daily News from 1987 until 1993. Teachout moved to New York City in 1985. Teachout held the position of classical music and dance critic for the Daily News from the years 1993 through 2000. In 2003, Teachout was hired on at The Wall Street Journal as the publication’s drama critic. In addition to that, he worked as a critic-at-large for the publication Commentary. A Terry Teachout Reader was published in 2004, All in the Dances: A Short Biography of George Balanchine was published in 2004, The Skeptic: A Life of H. L. Mencken was published in 2002, and City Limits: Memories of a Small-Town Childhood was published in 2004. Teachout’s books include: (1991).

Beyond the Boom: New Voices on American Life, Culture, and Politics was edited by Teachout in 1990 and featured an introduction written by Tom Wolfe. Ghosts on the Roof: Selected Journalism of Whittaker Chambers, 1931–1959 was also edited by Teachout. Both books were published under the year 1990. (1989). Teachout went through H. L. Mencken’s private documents and uncovered the manuscript of A Second Mencken Chrestomathy in 1992. She then edited it and submitted it to Alfred A. Knopf for publication the following year in 1995.

Pops: A Biography of Louis Armstrong was written by Teachout and published in 2009. According to a review that was published in the New York Times by Michiko Kakutani, “With Pops, his eloquent and important new biography of Armstrong, the critic and cultural historian Terry Teachout restores this jazzman to his deserved place in the pantheon of American artists.” Teachout’s biography of Armstrong is called “Pops.” Pops was selected by The Washington Post as one of the ten best books of 2009, The Economist as one of the finest books of the year, and The New York Times Book Review as one of the “100 notable books” of 2010. [2, 12] The Economist also selected Pops as one of the greatest books of the year.

The publication of Teachout’s biography titled “Duke: A Life of Duke Ellington” took place in the year 2013. The National Book Awards nonfiction prize will go to Duke, and he is on the long list. James Gavin, writing in the New York Times Book Review, praised Duke for its “sound scholarship and easy readability,” calling it a “clear-eyed reassessment of a man regarded in godlike terms” and stating that it “humanizes a man whom history has kept on a pedestal.” Gavin also referred to the book as a “clear-eyed reassessment of a man regarded in godlike terms.”  The publication was deemed “an immediate classic” by Kirkus Reviews. Teachout confirms his position as one of the most distinguished music biographers in the United States.  It was described as “revealing” by Publishers Weekly. Teachout manages to strike a “neat balance” between colorful narrative, astute character judgments, and musicological analysis.
