Thema Bryant-Davis Bio, Life, and Career:

Thema S. Bryant was born in 1974, and she currently serves as the director of the Culture and Trauma Research Laboratory at Pepperdine University, where she also teaches psychology. She is a professor of psychology at Pepperdine. Her line of inquiry investigates both the individual and societal effects of the trauma caused by oppression. In 2023, she won the election to become the President of the American Psychological Association. Bryant is the daughter of her parents, who are both ministers. Throughout her upbringing, she observed members of her community consulting her father for advice and guidance. When she was a teenager, she was taken away from Liberia because of the civil war, and she was relocated to Baltimore.

At Duke University, she earned a doctorate in clinical psychology after completing her coursework. The focus of her dissertation for her doctorate was on resiliency practices utilized by African American adults who had survived childhood abuse. She accepted a position as a postdoctoral researcher at Harvard Medical School, where she worked with the Victims of Violence Program. She moved there. After that, Bryant became a part of the SHARE Program at Princeton University, where she managed several activities to fight against sexual harassment and assault.  During the three years that she worked as the SHARE coordinator, she assisted in the training of staff members on LGBT-related discrimination as well as culturally relevant treatments.

Bryant made the transfer to California State University, Long Beach, in the year 2005. She remained there for a total of four years, from 2005 until 2007 when she was assigned to her current position as Professor of Psychology at Pepperdine University.  In her research, she examines both the systemic and interpersonal forms of trauma caused by oppression. Bryant is the host of the podcast titled “Homecoming,” which focuses on mental health topics. In the year 2023, she won the election to serve as President of the American Psychological Association. A subgroup of the American Psychological Association known as the Society for the Psychology of Women elected Bryant to the position of President. She served as the APA’s representative at the United Nations.

In 2001, she testified against racism, racial discrimination, xenophobia, and other forms of intolerance at the United Nations World Conference Against Racism, Racial Discrimination, and Xenophobia. In this installment of our Great Leaders Series, we would like to pay tribute to the individual who served as president of the Society for the Psychology of Women during the 2010-2011 academic year. In the history of the SPW division, she holds the title of the youngest president ever.

Duke University was Dr. Bryant’s alma mater for the bachelor’s degree in psychology as well as African and African-American studies, the master’s degree in clinical psychology, and the doctoral degree in clinical psychology. Her tenure at the Duke Psychology Clinic began in 1998 when she took on the role of clinical Coordinator. Dr. Bryant conducted her Ph.D. clinical internship at The Cambridge Hospital at the Harvard Medical Center from 1999 to 2000. During that time, she counseled trauma survivors both individually and in groups at the hospital.

Dr. Bryant stressed how important it was to cultivate a mentorship relationship with her graduate teachers that was mutually helpful. She gives credit for her awareness of sound research techniques to Dr. Susan Roth, who served as the chair of her dissertation committee. Dr. Bryant expressed his gratitude to Dr. Roth for igniting a passion for research within him. She was a feminist scholar as well as a trauma psychologist, and she taught me how to honor the voices of women and other trauma survivors within the realm of research.

Before joining the Sexual Harassment/Assault Advising, Resources, and Education (SHARE) program at Princeton University in 2001, Dr. Bryant began her academic career as an assistant professor at Lesley College in Cambridge, Massachusetts. Lesley College is located in Cambridge, Massachusetts. She served as the program coordinator for SHARE for a period of three years, during which time she trained the organization’s staff on culturally appropriate and empirically supported interventions, advocacy, education, prevention, and research for victims of sexual harassment and assault, LGBT-related prejudice and violence, and dating violence.
