Thupten Jinpa Bio, Life and Career:

Tibetan Buddhist scholar Thupten Jinpa Langri was born in 1958 and is a former monk who has worked as an academic in the fields of religious studies, Eastern philosophy, and Western philosophy. Since 1985, he has served the Dalai Lama as the primary English translator for the organization.

More than ten books written by the Dalai Lama have been edited and translated by him, including The World of Tibetan Buddhism (published by Wisdom Publications in 1993), A Good Heart: A Buddhist Perspective on the Teachings of Jesus (published by Wisdom Publications in 1996), and the number one book on the New York Times bestseller list, Ethics for the New Millennium (published by Riverhead in 1999).

1958 was the year that Thupten Jinpa Langri was born in Tibet. After completing his early schooling and training as a monk at the Zongkar Choede Monastery in Hunsur near Mysore, Karnataka, South India, he went on to acquire the Geshe Lharam degree from the Shartse College of Ganden monastic University in Mundgod, Karnataka, South India.

Over the course of five years, he instructed students at Ganden in Buddhist epistemology, metaphysics, Middle Way philosophy, and Buddhist psychology. In addition, Jinpa has a Bachelor of Arts with an Honors degree in Western Philosophy as well as a Doctor of Philosophy degree in Religious Studies, both of which were earned at Cambridge University in the United Kingdom.

Between the years 1996 and 1999, he served as the Margaret Smith Research Fellow in Eastern Religion at Girton College in Cambridge. Since then, he has gone on to found the Institute of Tibetan Classics, where he serves as both president and editor-in-chief of the series Classics in Tibet, which is the institute’s translation of ancient Tibetan texts.

In addition to this, he serves on the board of directors of the Mind and Life Institute, which is an organization whose mission is to encourage constructive interaction between the Buddhist tradition and Western science.

He is currently working as a visiting research scholar at Stanford University’s Stanford Institute for Neuro-Innovation and Translational Neurosciences (Stanford Institute).

Geshe Thupten Jinpa is the author of a significant number of books and essays. His most recent publications include Self, Reality, and Reason in Tibetan Thought: Tsongkhapa’s Quest for the Middle View, which he co-edited with Jas Elsner. Tibetan Songs of Spiritual Experience was also recently published.

Thupten Jinpa was a Tibetan monk in the past and holds the Geshe Lharam degree, in addition to a Bachelor of Arts in Philosophy from Cambridge University and a Doctor of Philosophy in Religious Studies from Cambridge University. Since 1985, he has served as the primary English interpreter for His Holiness the Dalai Lama, and in that role, he has gone on a significant number of journeys with the Dalai Lama.

His own publications include works in Tibetan, English translations of classical Tibetan texts, and books such as “Self, Reality, and Reason in Tibetan Philosophy,” “Dispelling the Darkness: A Jesuit’s Quest for the Soul of Tibet” (co-authored), and “A Fearless Heart: How the Courage to be Compassionate Can Transform Our Lives.” Jinpa was a Jesuit priest who spent many years in Tibet.

This November, on the occasion of the 600th anniversary of Tsongkhapa’s nirvana, Jinpa published his most recent work, a contemporary biography of one of Tibet’s most revered teachers titled “Tsongkhapa: A Buddha in the Land of Snows.”

In addition to being a well-known public speaker on the topics of secular adaptations, mindfulness, and compassion, Jinpa is the primary author of CCT (Compassion Cultivation Training), which is an eight-week formal program designed at Stanford University.

In addition to his roles as founder and president of the Compassion Institute, head of the Mind and Life Institute, and founder of the Institute of Tibetan Classics, he also teaches as an adjunct professor at McGill University’s School of Religious Studies.
