Tracye McQuirter Bio, Life, and Career:

Tracye McQuirter is a public health nutritionist, activist for veganism, author, and speaker who is of African-American descent. McQuirter spent his childhood in Washington, District of Columbia, and received his high school diploma from Sidwell Friends School in 1984. Amherst College awarded her the Bachelor of Arts degree in 1988, and New York University granted her the Master of Public Health Nutrition (MPH) degree in 2003. McQuirter’s teachers at Sidwell Friends School introduced her to the concept of vegetarianism when she was in the seventh grade.

In 1986, when McQuirter was a sophomore at Amherst College, the Black Student Union invited Dick Gregory, a legendary figure in the Civil Rights Movement and a global human rights activist, to campus to give a talk about the condition of black people in the United States. Instead, he spoke about the health, politics, economics, and culture of what Black people ate, as well as the reasons why they should become vegetarians. He referred to this as “the plate of Black America.” Because McQuirter was unable to shake what Gregory had said, she decided to educate herself on the subject of vegetarianism by reading.

During that time, she was a strategist for the successful lawsuit filed against the USDA to prove racial and food industry bias in the formation of the United States Dietary Guidelines. In 2002, when McQuirter was a graduate student at New York University, he and another individual established the Black Vegetarian Society of New York. After moving back to Washington, DC, McQuirter went on to direct the Vegetarian Society of DC Eat Smart Program, which was the first vegan nutrition program in the United States to be funded by the federal government, from 2004 until 2009. In addition, during that time period, McQuirter established the first vegan cooking and lecture series to be held at Whole Foods stores in the Washington, DC area.

After visiting Howard University, McQuirter learned that the city of Washington, DC is home to a sizable vegan and vegetarian community of African American people. She had become a firm believer in the vegetarian lifestyle by the time she went back to Amherst for her senior year. During her senior year, she was able to overcome her addiction to cheese and become a vegan. Prior to that, she had not yet given up cheese because she was still eating it. McQuirter co-founded We Feed Our People in 1988 with her sister, Marya McQuirter, and their friend, Water McGill, in order to provide food for unhoused residents living in front of the Martin Luther King, Jr. Memorial Library in downtown Washington, District of Columbia.

McQuirter was in her senior year of college at the time. Beginning in 1990 and continuing until 1996, McQuirter worked as the director of the Mary McLeod Bethune National Historic Site Museum in Washington, District of Columbia. In recognition of Mary McLeod Bethune’s role as a co-founder of the United Nations, she was invited to serve as an honorary delegate at the United Nations Conference on Women, which was held in Beijing, China, in 1996. This was done while she was in the region.McQuirter worked as a public policy liaison for the Physicians Committee for Responsible Medicine between the years 1999 and 2000.
