Vivian McPeak Bio, Life, and Career:
Seattle-based peace and social justice advocate Vivian William McPeak was born in 1958 in Los Angeles. In 1988, he established the Peace Heathens Community Action Group in Seattle. The organization has organized numerous rallies and community feeds, and it continues to put out a resource booklet and a website. Present-day Peace Heathens are heavily represented in the Seattle Hempfest crew. Executive Director Vivian McPeak.
In its 30th year, Seattle Hempfest is still run almost entirely by volunteers. During the years before the pandemic, we had 118 crews and enough people to fill over a thousand staff shirts. Over the years I’ve spent working at Seattle HEMPFEST, I’ve had the pleasure of interacting with thousands of people from all walks of life. The Seattle HEMPFEST has distinguished itself by becoming the largest annual free speech event in the United States and the largest annual cannabis policy reform event in the world. As a result, Seattle HEMPFEST has had an impact on policy at the local, state, and federal levels, and it has become a benchmark against which future festivals can measure their own success.
A lot of really great, really anti-authoritarian, really hard-working people have taken up the green sword of 420 truth and fought to end prohibition, and it looks like they’re finally going to win. Ever since 1991, the month of August has been marked in Seattle as Hempfest time. Hempfest was started by Vivian McPeak and Gary Cook as a “small gathering of stoners,” but it has since expanded to a three-day political rally, concert, and arts and crafts fair attended by more than 100,000 people.
Hempfest, however, will need to change tactics this year. Hempfest is one of the largest meetings in the world to lobby for the legalization of marijuana, and this challenge is one that the organizers may not have anticipated. Director McPeak is an advocate for peace, social justice, and cannabis rights who is dedicated to building coalitions with the public and government.
In March, when news of the COVID-19 pandemic first broke, Vivian and I were not overly worried. Since our event isn’t until August, we foolishly thought everything would be ready by then. Unfortunately, as events unfolded, it became clear that we could not hold this year’s event in the parks without putting everyone in danger. This means that the event we’ve been planning for the past 28 years must be canceled.
After nearly three decades of tireless advocacy, he and the other event planners were fighting to keep it from being canceled. In light of the event’s cancellation, the organization is in a bit of a financial bind. We have financial commitments we cannot fulfill, and we have never missed a payment on any of our debts, he said. To put it another way, “to live, we must satisfy those responsibilities,” and the best way to accomplish so is for Hempfest to thrive, which means rapidly developing new sources of income.
In order to fulfill these duties, the cannabis industry needs the help and cooperation of the broader community. McPeak explained that by moving Hempfest online, they hoped to strengthen the festival’s impact. “An online event is well-suited to a global stage, enabling a wider and more varied audience to take part. It allows us to explore new channels for spreading our message and helps us plan for future events, both online and in the real world.
The first-ever online Hempfest will have a lineup of speakers and musical acts, much like their real-world counterparts. “Since we’ve moved everything online, we don’t have to worry about accommodating a specific amount of individuals on specific days at specific times. Because the event may now be accessed from anywhere in the world, at any time, the potential for disseminating useful knowledge has increased dramatically. For this reason, we sought a lively concept for Hempfest 2020.
After a global pandemic, we are pleased to introduce the world to our theme: a fresh start. As he put it, “by 2020, we will have assembled many of the industry’s leading luminaries in fields as diverse as medicine, agriculture, and science to paint a picture of the cannabis industry’s potential in the wake of COVID.
Our mission is to show how cannabis can be a driving force in reimagining a global society that prioritizes public health, social justice, and environmental protection. The current state of humanity’s economic and environmental health and sustainability has been exposed to severe flaws by this worldwide pandemic. Hempfest 2020 will give an outline of how cannabis might help humanity recover from a pandemic and move forward into a brighter, healthier future.
McPeak and the rest of the Hempfest family are sending their thoughts and prayers to the other local, national, and international events and businesses that are also struggling to weather this unprecedented health crisis. They hope you will join them in their efforts to make the world a better, greener place, and they encourage your support and dedication along the way.
