He is also a winner of an Emmy Award in this category. He is well-known for his many stand-up comedy appearances in clubs, theatres, and on television; his book on The History of Stand-Up; and his supporting comedic acting roles in films and television shows such as The X-Files, The Larry Sanders Show, Curb Your Enthusiasm, Crashing, Silicon Valley, Legally Blonde, 50 First Dates, The 40-Year-Old Virgin, and Step Brothers. His book is titled The History of Stand- During the pilot season of the NBC show Late Night with Jimmy Fallon, he served as the show’s head monologue writer.

A Primetime Emmy Award in 2022 was bestowed upon him for his work as a producer on the HBO documentary George Carlin’s American Dream. Federman is one of a total of six children and was born in Los Angeles. He spent his childhood in Silver Spring, Maryland, before relocating to Plantation, Florida, when he was 10 years old. At the age of 14, he joined a band and began playing the drums professionally at local wedding receptions. He trained himself in ventriloquism and performed at a variety of school activities (at South Plantation High School), as well as at local churches and service organizations. He gave the sports scores from his high school on Miami radio station WWOK, and he made his debut on local television on WPLG’s Youth and the Issue arguing the death sentence. Both of these appearances were on WPLG.

Federman participated as a background actor in the 1976 production of Black Sunday, directed by John Frankenheimer and shot at the Miami Orange Bowl. Federman was granted admission to the prestigious Tisch School of the Arts at New York University in the fall of 1977. While there, he studied acting under the tutelage of the renowned Stella Adler. At the Eisner and Lubin Auditorium, he put on a performance of his own show called Comedy Tonight, which featured future Broadway star, Donna Murphy. After graduating from New York University, Federman performed his one-man show at the 13th Street Theater. There, he shared the stage with Brother Theodore on a rotating basis. In addition, he portrayed six different characters in the theater’s production of Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs, which ran for an extended period of time.

Soon after, he began headlining stand-up comedy shows at a number of New York City comedy clubs, the most notable of which were Catch a Rising Star and The Comic Strip, which is now known as Comic Strip Live. During this time period, he began to incorporate music into his performance act. On his electric ukulele, he would end each of his concerts by playing hard rock songs by artists such as Led Zeppelin, Jimi Hendrix, Iron Butterfly, and The Rolling Stones. In 1987, Federman made the trip to Los Angeles, where he quickly found work at a number of well-known comedy venues, including The Improv, IGBYs, The Laugh Factory, and The Comedy & Magic Club. He recorded several stand-up comedy shows for television, some of which include An Evening at the Improv, George Schlatter’s Comedy Club, the CBS Morning Show, 2 Drink Minimum, Star Search, Good Times Cafe, The A-List, and MTV’s Half Hour Comedy Hour.

He embarked on a massive tour, giving performances at almost two hundred universities. Together with Marc Raider, Scott LaRose, and Steve Hytner, he established the improvisational group “No Fat Guy,” and later, he and Jordan Brady were a member of a music-comedy duo for a short time. After beginning to book television commercials, Federman went on to appear in dozens of national spots for clients such as Eureka Vacuums, Holiday Inn, the United States Navy, Wendy’s, Taboo, Eagle cars (with Greg Kinnear), McDonald’s, Glad Bags, Sprite, Total Raisin Bran, Ford, the United States Olympic Team, Suzuki Samurai, Sizzler, Del Monte, U.S. Cellular, Coors, and 7–11. A long-running advertisement for Hertz Rent-A-Car featured him as the first “not exactly” person.

This helped him earn some notoriety. Federman started getting small roles on television shows like Baywatch, Amen, Dear John, A Different World, and Doogie Howser. He also had guest appearances on News Radio. He appeared on three different episodes of L.A. Law and three episodes of Living Single (3 episodes). Federman made his first appearance on The Tonight Show in 1994, and he has continued to make guest appearances on the program ever since. In addition, he has been seen on episodes of Late Fridays, Comedy Showcase, and Premium Blend. In 2004, he recorded his very own thirty-minute-long stand-up comedy show for the series Comedy Central Presents. After appearing as Larry Sander’s brother Stan in the 1998 season of The Larry Sanders Show, Wayne later collaborated with Garry Shandling on The X-Files episode “Hollywood A.D.” The imaginative episode was written by David Duchovny and filmed by him as well. It focused on “Wayne Federman,” a Hollywood producer and writer who was also a college acquaintance of the assistant FBI director Walter Skinner.
