She was born and raised in Washington, District of Columbia.

After starting her career as a stand-up comedian in 2004, she quickly became a round-table guest on the television show, Chelsea, Lately. After that, she went on to write, produce, and appear in the comedy Whitney for NBC, in which she played a version of herself that was only slightly altered from the truth. After completing its first two seasons, the show was pulled off the air in 2013. During the same time period, Cummings was also the brains behind the comedy 2 Broke Girls, which debuted on CBS in 2011 and ran until 2017.

In 2010, Cummings debuted on Comedy Central with her first stand-up special titled Money Shot, which lasted for one full hour. After this, she released a second stand-up special for the network titled “I Love You,” which aired later (2014). She hoped to pursue a career in either journalism or documentary filmmaking once she graduated from college. She ended up relocating to Los Angeles in order to pursue another profession, and after she got there, she landed a position as a prankster on Punk’d, a famous program starring Ashton Kutcher. During the time that she was working on the program, someone said that they thought she would be successful as a stand-up comic. This served as the impetus for her to give it a go.

She started chasing her gift by performing in places like bowling alleys, sushi restaurants, and comedy clubs. After a while, she began performing at renowned comedy clubs in Hollywood, in addition to appearing on late-night entertainment shows such as The Tonight Show with Conan O’Brien and Chelsea Lately with Chelsea Handler. Eventually, she moved up a tier and began performing at renowned comedy clubs in New York City. Her big break came in 2011 when she was recruited as a co-writer and co-creator for the hit CBS comedy 2 Broke Girls. The program is still running strong today.

Almost a year after she was terminated from her previous job, she had three series on television that she had produced and owned. The difficult path that she had to travel in order to reach her current level of accomplishment has taught her humility.

This path is more winding than it is straight, and it is paved with Cummings’ raw and unfiltered stories about how failure paved the way for success, #metoo, mental health, the difficulties of dealing with low self-esteem, the fight against eating disorder, and the ongoing maintenance of codependency. These experiences gave her with a more profound awareness of who she was, the resources she needed to achieve her goals, a determination to assist others in achieving clarity, and of course, a wealth of humorous material.

Cummings, seeing that many topics had become taboo in light of the current political atmosphere, wrote her stand-up comedy special for Netflix titled “Can I Touch It?,” which debuted in July of 2019. She is of the opinion that there is no subject or subject matter that should be avoided because it is too contentious or taboo.
