Will Johnson Bio, Life and Career:

Will Johnson is an American musician, singer-songwriter, author, and painter. He is the lead singer of the bands Centro-matic and South San Gabriel. Johnson was born on March 23, 1971, in the United States. “one of the most prolific artists in American indie rock,” (also known as “one of the most prolific artists in rock”) In addition to releasing records under his own name, Johnson is also a member of the bands Monsters of Folk, New Multitudes, and Overseas, and he has appeared in concert with the Undertow Orchestra. Johnson has also released records under his own name.

Johnson was born in the town of Kennett in the state of Missouri. His mother had remarried when he was 11 years old, and shortly afterward, the family relocated to Killeen, Texas. Johnson participated in the vibrant music scene in Denton while he was a student at the University of North Texas, which is located in the city. He received a bachelor’s degree with a dual concentration in elementary education and English.

Early on in life, Johnson began his musical career by playing the drums and piano, in addition to singing in his local church choir. After relocating from Kennett, Missouri to Killeen, Texas, he joined and eventually became the band’s drummer for the jangle-rock band The Benjamins, which he co-founded. Before Johnson departed to attend the University of North Texas in 1989, they issued two cassettes in the years 1988 and 1989.

During his time there, Johnson was a founding member of the band Baboon in addition to playing in bands such as Polyester, Salt Lick, and The Dooms UK. On the Sunday following the Super Bowl in 1991, Johnson, along with Peter Schmidt and Clark Vogeler, formed the band Melt, which later renamed itself Funland the following year. In that same year, Funland made their recording debut with Arista Records’ EP titled “Sweetness,” which was issued in March of 1993.

In 1995, the band issued its lone studio album of extended length, titled The Funland Band, on Steve Records. The band was active in the United States in terms of touring. In June of 1996, Funland came to an end after having operated for five and a half years. When Johnson got back to college in May of 1995, he decided to start working on Centro-matic as a four-track cassette project.

It was the first time he had written and sung songs, and later that year, the cassette Non-Directional Jetpack Race was released to the public. After releasing a few singles on 7-inch vinyl, Johnson began performing live under the Centro-matic identity in March 1996, first as a one-man show consisting of electric guitar, vocals, and the Centro-matic moniker.

Redo The Stacks was the first Centro-matic album to be a full-length release, and it was recorded by Johnson in December 1996. With the exception of the violin (played by Scott Danbom) and the cello (played by Lindsay Romig), Johnson performed all of the instruments on the lo-fi record, which was engineered by Johnson’s longtime buddy Matt Pence.

In February of 1997, Johnson began doing full-band Centro-matic gigs with Mark Hedman and Pence on the bass guitar and drums, respectively. The band decided to keep things casual and do their first practice after their second gig rather than before it.

In March of 1997, Danbom became a member of the band and contributed vocals, as well as playing the piano, fiddle, and bass guitar. Until they decided to call it quits in 2014, Centro-matic’s lineup remained the same throughout the entirety of their recording career and heavy touring in the United States and Europe.

The band has issued a total of twenty-five recordings, including ten albums, five extended plays (EPs), six seven-inch recordings, cassettes, compilations, and soundtrack appearances. Jeff Powell, Anders Parker, and Scott Solter were among the musicians who collaborated with the band.

At Jay Farrar’s recording studio in Millstadt, Illinois, the full-length albums Navigational, the B-sides compilation Static vs. The Strings Vol. 1, and All The Falsest Hearts Can Try were all captured during their creation. After that, the band made the majority of its recordings at The Echo Lab, which is located in Argyle, Texas. Johnson, together with the other members of Centro-matic, established the band South San Gabriel in the spring of 2001.

Centro-matic wanted to work together with and incorporate other musicians while also experimenting with a more open-ended and ambient approach to producing and recording music, and this desire led to the formation of the band. The lineup for South San Gabriel is often changing, and the band may play a show with anywhere from three to ten musicians. In addition to full-length albums, EPs, and singles, South San Gabriel has issued three compilation albums.
