Willie Brown Bio, Life, and Career:

Willie Lewis Brown Jr. is a retired politician who was born in the United States on March 20, 1934. He was the first African American to ever hold the post of mayor of San Francisco and was a member of the Democratic Party. He served in that capacity from 1996 to 2004. Brown was born in Mineola, Texas, which is also the location of his high school graduation. In 1951, Brown relocated to San Francisco. After receiving his bachelor’s degree in 1955 from San Francisco State University and his Juris Doctorate in 1958 from the University of California, Hastings College of the Law, he began his career as an attorney and became active in the civil rights movement.

He was also a member of the NAACP. After being elected to the California Assembly in 1964, he quickly rose to prominence as one of the most influential state legislators in the United States, earning him widespread acclaim in the city of San Francisco. Brown was able to manage colleagues and keep party discipline under his watch as a legislator, earning him a reputation as a defender of homosexual and lesbian civil rights. Brown also had the ability to maintain party discipline.

Between the years 1980 and 1995, he presided over the California State Assembly in the role of Speaker. In 1990, an initiative on the ballot in California that would have limited the number of terms that state lawmakers may serve in office was successful and exploited his lengthy tenure and powerful position as a focal point. Brown kept control of the Assembly despite the Republicans holding a narrow majority during the third and final of the three post-initiative terms he was allowed to serve. Around the time that his current tenure was coming to a close, he made the decision to run for mayor of San Francisco.

During the time that Brown served as Mayor of San Francisco, the city’s budget was increased, and great progress was made on a variety of civic projects, including real estate development, public works, city beautification, and other municipal endeavors. Brown served as mayor during the “dot-com” era, which coincided with a period in which San Francisco’s economy experienced significant growth. His administration had a greater representation of Asian Americans, women, Latinos, gays, and African-Americans than the administrations of his predecessors.

His government also had a greater number of LGBT members. Brown was successful in his bid for reelection in 1999; however, due to term restrictions, he was unable to run for a third term, and he was ultimately succeeded in office by his political protégé Gavin Newsom. He was the fourth child out of a total of five. When Brown was a child, Mineola was plagued by outbreaks of mob violence that prevented African Americans from exercising their right to vote. His first work was as a shoeshine boy at a barber shop that catered exclusively to white customers. After that, he went on to have careers as a janitor, a fry cook, and a field laborer. He owes his strong work ethic to his grandmother, who instilled it in him from an early age. After graduating from Mineola Colored High School, which he later referred to as a deplorable institution, he moved to San Francisco in August 1951 at the age of 17 to live with his uncle.
