Al Jardine Bio, Life and Career:

Alan Jardine, often known as “Al” Jardine, is a guitarist, singer, and composer most known for being a founding member of the band The Beach Boys, located in California. Al was born in Lima, Ohio, on September 3, 1942. When his family relocated to Hawthorne, California, he became acquainted with Brian, Carl, and Dennis Wilson, as well as Mike Love and David Marks. They were known as the rock ‘n’ roll voice of the West Coast after forming the band known as The Beach Boys and being known for their flawless harmonies and original songs about surfing, beaches, hot rods, and California beauties.

Al, a talented musician who could play several stringed instruments, was the main singer and performed rhythm guitar on the number one song “Help Me Rhonda.” Early recordings also had Al playing bass. He also penned or collaborated on the composition of many pieces, the most notable of which can be found on the albums Holland, Carl and the Passions–So Tough, Surf’s Up, and Sunflower. Al continued to tour with The Beach Boys throughout the 1970s, 1980s, and 1990s until he eventually parted ways with the band in 1998 after Carl Wilson had passed away.

In 2001, Al released his first album, Live in Las Vegas. This album featured his sons Matt and Adam Jardine and Carnie and Wendy Wilson (Brian Wilson’s daughters, who were also in Wilson Phillips). In 2010, Al released his solo album A Postcard From California. This album featured guest appearances from Neil Young, Stephen Stills, David Crosby, Steve Miller, Glen Campbell, Gerry Beckley, and Dewey Bunnell (America).

Flea (Red New renditions of classic Beach Boys songs such as “Help Me, Rhonda” and “California Saga” were included on the album, in addition to pieces with an environmental focus such as “Don’t Fight The Sea” and “Looking Down The Coast.” In addition, Al was presented with a Lifetime Achievement Award from the Grammys in 2001 for his work with The Beach Boys. Al joined Brian Wilson, Mike Love, Bruce Johnston, and David Marks in the studio in 2012 to record new Beach Boys material for the album That’s Why God Made the Radio.

That same year, the Beach Boys reunited for a tour to celebrate their 50th anniversary. Al joined Brian Wilson in 2016 for a global time, celebrating the 50th anniversary of The Beach Boys’ timeless classic Pet Sounds, which continued through 2018. Traditional songs, including “Wouldn’t It Be Nice,” “God Only Knows,” and “Sloop John B,” are retained on the album. “Sloop John B” is a tune that Al learned from The Kingston Trio and brought to Brian with a fresh chord arrangement to match The Beach Boys’ singing style. It became a significant smash worldwide and contributed to Pet Sounds reaching the top of the charts..

The early days of the Beach Boys are thoroughly recorded, but Jardine’s participation in the band has seldom been the center of attention in stories about the band. In some accounts of the band’s history, Al Jardine is called the “lost Beach Boy.” After all, he was the only crew member who was not a Wilson nor a relative of a Wilson. He was also the superior Wilson not to be a band member. However, Jardine’s mother contributed some of the funds needed to purchase equipment for the band while they were recording “Surfin’,” and Jardine was the one who played bass on the tune. On the Billboard Hot 100, “Surfin'” debuted at position 75. Despite this, Jardine left the band when he received his first royalty check, which did not even equal a thousand dollars. This was a Stewart Sutcliff moment.

Al Jardine, who would later become famous in the rock and roll industry, studied dentistry for one year. Imagine how different the landscape of rock and roll would be now if he hadn’t accepted Brian Wilson’s offer to get back together with the Beach Boys. Al Jardine ran into legal trouble many years later, which may have been caused by the band’s multiple successful albums and singles while he was away. Ironically, the question of who exactly comprised the Beach Boys grew more pressing as the band ceased to be a dominant force in the recording industry but continued to be a formidable live act.

Al Jardine quit the Beach Boys after years of internal conflict because he disagreed with the band’s path at the time of his departure. Due to the untimely death of founding members Dennis and Carl Wilson and the absence of Brian, Mike Love managed to keep a controlling stake in the band and the firm that it was affiliated with, Brother Records. Because of Love’s legal action, Jardine could not use any name that even remotely resembled the Hall of Fame act that Love was instrumental in establishing (i.e., the usage of the term “beach”). As a result, he gave his band the moniker “Al Jardine’s Family & Friends,” and among its members were his sons Matt Jardine and Adam Jardine (all of whom were included in the DVD release of Nashville Sounds), as well as Wendy Wilson and Carnie Wilson (both of whom are members of Wilson Phillips and Brian’s children).

Al started performing solo gigs in 2018 as part of a tour entitled “A Postcard from California,” during which he shared songs and anecdotes ranging from his early days as a musician to his most recent solo record. An intimate performance of hits, rarities, and never-before-heard accounts (together with never-before-seen photographs and films) from Al’s incredible career is given by Al, accompanied by his son Matt Jardine, who also performs in the show. It is undoubtedly a program that should be noticed, as fans and reviewers have given it high praise
