Andrew Cohen is a well-known American spiritual teacher. He was born on October 23, 1955. Author, former editor of the magazine What Is Enlightenment?, and founder of the global spiritual community EnlightenNext, which ceased operations in 2013, he is known for all of these things. Cohen was born in New York City to a Jewish family that belonged to the upper middle class and was secular.

At the age of sixteen, Cohen had an unexpected experience of what he calls “cosmic consciousness,” which profoundly altered the course of his life. When he was 22 years old, he had already been working toward a career as a jazz musician when he decided to embark on a journey to rediscover an earlier spiritual experience. He eventually met H. W. L. Poonja in 1986. H. W. L. Poonja was a student of Ramana Maharshi, who taught that there is no need to exert any mental effort in order to achieve enlightenment “because it is merely the realization of what one already has.” He shared this philosophy with H.
