Brian Cox Bio, Life and Career:

Brian Edward Cox CBE FRS is an English physicist and former musician who was born on March 3, 1968. He is currently a professor of particle physics in the School of Physics and Astronomy at the University of Manchester and The Royal Society Professor for Public Engagement in Science. He is best known to the general public as the presenter of science programmes, particularly on BBC Radio 4’s The Infinite Monkey Cage and the Wonders of… series as well as for publications in the field of popular science, such as “Why Does E=mc2?” and The Universe on a Quantum Level. Before beginning his academic career, Cox was a keyboard player for the British band Dare and D: Ream.

He was born on March 3, 1968, in the Royal Oldham Hospital, and he has a younger sister. Cox has been described as the natural successor for the BBC’s scientific programming by both David Attenborough and Patrick Moore.  Cox was a keyboard player for the British band Dare and D: Ream. His mother worked as a cashier for Yorkshire Bank, while his father worked in middle management in the same branch. He remembers having a joyful childhood in Oldham, which included activities like ballet, gymnastics, and seeing planes and buses.

His parents both worked for Yorkshire Bank. During the years 1979 and 1986, he was a student at Oldham’s Hulme Grammar School, which is a private institution. He has stated in many interviews and in an episode of Wonders of the Universe that when he was 12, the book Cosmos by Carl Sagan was a key factor in inspiring him to become a physicist.  He stated on The Jonathan Ross Show that he performed poorly on his maths A-level exam: “I got a D… I was really not very good… I found out you need to practise.”

After that, he became a member of the dance act D: Ream, which was responsible for several hits in the UK charts, including the number-one single “Things Can Only Get Better,” which was subsequently utilised as an election anthem by New Labour, despite the fact that he did not play on the track. Cox wrote the foreword of the official Orchestral Manoeuvres in the Dark biography, OMD: Pretending to See the Future (2018), having been an “obsessive” fan of the band in his youth. In 2015, he appeared as a guest keyboardist during a live performance of the song “Your Silent Face” by New Order.

Cox also appeared as a guest keyboardist during a live performance of the song “Your Silent Face” by New Order. He said of their songs, “They shaped my character and inspired me to make music.”Cox has appeared in many science programmes for BBC radio and television, including In Einstein’s Shadow, the BBC Horizon series, (“The Six Billion Dollar Experiment”, “What on Earth is Wrong with Gravity?”, “Do You Know What Time It Is?”, and “Can we Make a Star on Earth?”) and as a voice-over for the BBC’s Bitesize revision programmes.

Wonders of Life, which he describes as “a physicist’s take on life/natural history,” was broadcast in 2013. He co-presents Space Hoppers and has also appeared in Dani’s House on CBBC. He began presenting the television series Wonders of the Solar System for BBC Two in early 2010, which consisted of five parts, and Wonders of the Universe, which consisted of four parts, which began on March 6, 2011.

In addition, Cox has hosted a BBC series called Science Britannica, which consists of three episodes, and in which he investigates the role that British scientists have played over the course of the past 350 years, as well as the connection between British science and the way the general public views it . Cox was given the opportunity to co-present Stargazing Live, a three-day live astronomy series, by BBC Two in January 2011. The series was co-presented with physicist-turned-comedian Dara O’Brien and featured chat show host Jonathan Ross. Stargazing Live was linked to events taking place all over the United Kingdom. In January 2012 and 2013, respectively, the show aired its second and third series, each of which included a different group of guests.

Since November 2009 Cox has co-presented a BBC Radio 4 “comedy science magazine programme”, The Infinite Monkey Cage with comedian Robin Ince. Guests have included comedians Tim Minchin, Alexei Sayle, and Dara Ó Briain, scientists including Alice Roberts of the BBC show The Incredible Human Journey, and astrophysicist Neil deGrasse Tyson. Cox also appeared in Ince’s Nine Lessons and Carols for Godless People. He was a frequent contributor to the BBC 6 Music Breakfast Show (and the Afternoon Show from 2019) with Shaun Keaveny, including a weekly segment and an annual Christmas special with Keaveny and Brian Eno.

Since 2019, he has also contributed to the BBC 6 Music Afternoon Show. He was a guest on the episode of Robert Llewellyn’s CarPool podcast series that aired on July 24, 2009. In addition, Cox has made many appearances at TED, where he has delivered speeches on the Large Hadron Collider (LHC) and particle physics.  In 2009, he was named one of People magazine’s Hottest Men Alive, and in 2010, he was featured in The Case for Mars by Symphony of Science. In November 2010, he had a promotional presentation at the Apple Store in Covent Garden, where he spoke about his new e-book set to match his new television series and answered questions from the public.

In 2003, he married American science broadcaster Gia Milinovich in Duluth, Minnesota. In 2009, they welcomed a boy into the world, and Milinovich already had another son from a prior relationship. At the moment, the family makes their home in Battersea.Cox has rejected the label of atheist and has stated that he has “no personal faith.”  In 2009, he contributed to the charity book The Atheist’s Guide to Christmas.  He is a humanist, and he is a Distinguished Supporter of Humanists UK.  In June 2019, Cox explained that he cannot be certain that there is not a God and that science cannot answer every question. Oldham Athletic is a team that Cox follows on the football pitch, and he has been a holder of a season ticket for the club in the past.
