D. Todd Christofferson Bio, Life and Career:

David Todd Christofferson, an American religious leader and former attorney, was birth on January 24, 1945. He now serves as a member of the Quorum of the Twelve Apostles of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints (LDS Church). Christofferson was born in the United States. Since 1993, he has served the Church as a general authority. At this time, he has the position of being the tenth most senior apostle in the Church.

Christofferson spent his childhood in Utah and New Jersey, and immediately upon graduation from high school, he went to Argentina to serve as an LDS missionary there. After that, he attended law school at Duke University after completing his undergraduate degree in English literature at Brigham Young University (BYU). Christofferson worked as a law clerk for Judge John Sirica on the United States District Court for the District of Columbia after he graduated from law school in 1972. At the time.

Sirica presided over a significant portion of the legal procedures that resulted from the Watergate crisis. Christofferson was one of Sirica’s law clerks. After that, Christofferson worked as a lawyer in private practice before moving on to become an in-house counsel for NationsBank, which is now a subsidiary of Bank of America. Between 1972 and 1974, Christofferson started his career as a lawyer and law clerk for the Honorable John J. Sirica of the United States District Court for the District of Columbia. Shortly after Christofferson started working as a clerk, Sirica was appointed to preside over the judicial procedures relating to the Watergate scandal. After working as a court clerk, Christofferson enlisted in the United States Armed Forces and continued serving in the reserves for another eight years.

Christofferson practiced law in several cities, including Herndon, Virginia; Charlotte, North Carolina; Washington, District of Columbia; and Nashville, Tennessee. Christofferson served as the volunteer chairman of the Affordable Housing organization in Nashville, Tennessee, and as assistant general counsel at NationsBank in Charlotte. Associate general counsel of Nation’s Bank Corp. (now Bank of America) in Charlotte, North Carolina; former senior vice president and general counsel for Sovran Bank of Tennessee in Nashville; practiced law in Washington, District of Columbia; served as a law clerk to U.S. District Judge John J. Sirica in Washington; now resides in Charlotte.

Participates actively in Scouting and was awarded the Silver Beaver Award for his service; serves as chairman of the Middle Tennessee Literacy Coalition and the Affordable Housing of Nashville; is engaged in several religious groups in the Nashville, Tennessee, region. A member of the Presidency of the Seventy, a regional representative, a stake president and counselor, a bishop, the president of the stake mission, a high councilor, and an early morning seminary instructor, he also served in the Argentina North Mission from 1964 to 1966.

During the Watergate trials, Christofferson worked as a law clerk for the Honorable John J. Sirica. They achieved the distinction of becoming the first people outside of the White House to listen to the Nixon White House recordings together. In a lecture he gave in June 2017 to professors and students at Christ Church College in Oxford, England, Christofferson stated, “Judge Sirica and I were shocked as we heard Nixon calmly ask” how much money it would take to keep the Watergate burglars silent about how much money it would take to keep them quiet. “Both the judge and I couldn’t believe what we were hearing, and we didn’t want to believe it,” she said. He handed me a letter suggesting we listen to the recording again and then rewind it. We had both, up until this point, held out hope that the president [of the United States] was not engaged, but it was now clear that this was not the case.

While serving in the Presidency of the Seventy when he received the call to the Quorum of the Twelve, he was a General Authority. While serving in the Presidency of the Seventy, Elder Christofferson was responsible for operations in the North American West, Northwest, and Southeast areas. In addition to that, he held the position of Executive Director of the Family and Church History Department. Previously, he served as the president of the Mexico South Area of the Church and made his home in Mexico City then.

Elder Christoffer served as an assistant general counsel for NationsBank Corporation in Charlotte, North Carolina before he was called to serve as a full-time General Authority of the Church. NationsBank Corporation is now known as Bank of America. Before that, he was senior vice president and general counsel at the Commerce Union Bank of Tennessee in Nashville.
