David Robinson Bio, Life, and Career:

David Maurice Robinson is an American former professional basketball player who played for the San Antonio Spurs in the National Basketball Association (NBA) from 1989 to 2003. He is also a minority owner of the San Antonio Spurs. Robinson was born on August 6, 1965, in the United States. Robinson was honored as a 10-time NBA All-Star, the 1995 NBA Most Valuable Player, a two-time NBA champion (1999 and 2003), a two-time Olympic Gold Medal winner (1992, 1996), a two-time inductee into the Naismith Memorial Basketball Hall of Fame (2009 for his individual career and 2010 as a member of the 1992 United States men’s Olympic basketball team), and a two-time inductee into the United States Olympic Hall of Fame (2008 individually.

He was selected for both the NBA 50th Anniversary Team in 1996 and the NBA 75th Anniversary Team in 2021, recognizing him as one of the greatest players in the history of the league. It is generally agreed upon that he is among the best centers in the history of college basketball as well as the NBA. Robinson was the second child born to Ambrose and Freda Robinson, and he was the second child born in Key West, Florida.

Because Robinson’s father served in the United States Navy, the family relocated quite a bit throughout Robinson’s childhood. Robinson did exceptionally well in school and in almost all sports, with the exception of basketball, after his father had retired from the Navy and the family had relocated to Woodbridge, Virginia. Robinson received his high school education at Osbourn Park in Manassas, Virginia, which is located just outside Washington, District of Columbia, where Robinson’s father was employed as an engineer.

Robinson was just 5 feet 9 inches (1.75 meters) tall when he was in his junior year of high school (between the ages of 16 and 17). This was the case for most of Robinson’s childhood and adolescent years. However, during his senior year (when he was 17–18 years old), he underwent a significant growth spurt and ended up reaching a height of 6 feet 6 inches (1.98 meters). Even though he had never participated in any organized basketball or attended any basketball camps, the school’s basketball coach decided to add him to the team. Robinson went on to receive all-area and all-district honors, but collegiate basketball coaches showed little interest in recruiting him.

In 1983, Robinson received his diploma from Osbourn Park. After earning a score of 1320 on the SAT, he decided to enroll at the United States Naval Academy, where he would study mathematics and participate in the school’s basketball program. Robinson had reached the height requirement of 6 feet 7 inches (2.01 meters) by the time the new academic year began in the fall. At the time, the Naval Academy had a height restriction for all midshipmen of 6 feet 6 inches (1.98 meters). The superintendent of the institution gave him a dispensation after determining that it was doubtful that he would continue to grow much more.

However, Robinson continued to grow throughout his time at the academy, and by the beginning of his second year there, he was already very close to reaching his adult height of 7 feet 0 inches (2.13 meters), which eventually barred him from serving on any ships in the United States Navy. According to the regulations of the NBA, Robinson might have been selected again in the draft after completing his time in the Navy because he had not signed a contract. Even though there was talk that he might decide against signing with the Spurs,  the fact is that he did indeed end up doing so. Robinson agreed to transfer to San Antonio for the 1989–90 season, but only on the condition that the Spurs would either pay him an amount equal to the average of the salaries of the two highest-paid players in the league each year or let him become a free agent. Robinson chose the former option.

The Spurs had been a perennial also-ran throughout the second half of the 1980s, reaching rock bottom in the 1988–1989 season with a record of 21–61, which was at the time the worst in the history of the franchise. Although a lot of people believed that after Robinson joined the Spurs, they would get back to being a decent team, none anticipated what happened in his first season with the team. Robinson guided the Spurs to the greatest single-season turnaround in NBA history at the time.

This record was later surpassed by the Spurs themselves in the 1997–98 season after the draft of Tim Duncan, and it was then surpassed by the Boston Celtics in the 2007–08 NBA season. The Spurs jumped to a record of 56–26, which is a tremendous improvement of 35 games over their previous record. The Spurs have now qualified for the postseason in seven straight years. During the 1991–1992 NBA season, Robinson amassed the most blocks of any player in the league, earning him the title of NBA Defensive Player of the Year.

Additionally, Robinson was a member of the United States Olympic Dream Team in 1992, which went on to win the gold medal in Barcelona. In the 1993–1994 NBA season, he was locked in a duel for the scoring title with Shaquille O’Neal. He won the title by scoring 71 points against the Los Angeles Clippers, beating George Gervin’s single-game franchise record of 63 points. During that season, Robinson set career highs in scoring (29.8 points per game), rebounding (10.7 boards per game), assist (career-high 4.8 assists per game), and blocking (3.3 shots per game).
