Ed O’Neill Bio, Life and Career:

American actor and comedian Edward Leonard O’Neil. He was born on April 12th, 1946, and played Al Bundy on the hit TV show Married… with Children from 1987 until 1997. He received two Golden Globe Award nominations for his performance in this role. O’Neil has made subsequent appearances in a wide variety of movies and TV shows. The success, however, came from his part as Jay Pritchett on Modern Family from 2009 forward.

Ed was a football player all through high school and college. He felt that because of his passion for football that he would be more appealing to women, but he quickly realized that he was mistaken. While attending college, he was a member of the Youngstown State University (YSU) and Ohio University. Though a talented player, he was released by the Pittsburgh Steelers shortly.

After joining as a Rookie (Chuck Knolls’ first year) in 1969 due to his “undisciplined and disruptive” behavior and his inability to get along with head coaches. A lot of the time, he treated football more like a chore than a hobby. He quickly realized that performing was where his heart was. After being released by the Steelers, Ed chose to pursue acting.

The role of the Greek guard in “Antigone” was made possible by his performance in “Rainmaker” in Youngstown.Following that, he decided to take some acting classes. While he was a student at Ohio University, he taught Social Studies to sixth graders who were learning at a slower pace.Ed didn’t decide to make acting his career until 1977.

Ed did not appear in Deliverance, at least not that I am aware of.Ed worked in a variety of fields during the course of his life. He worked as a bellhop at a hotel (when the Pittsburgh Steelers paid him a surprise visit), bartender, steelworker, teacher of fast reading, and even used-car dealer. At the age of 30, he was already working as a waiter. He uprooted to the Big Apple and enrolled in the Circle in the Square for academic pursuits.

Ed did not appear in the film “Deliverance” from 1972, despite widespread misconception otherwise.Ed starred with Danny Aiello in the Broadway play “Knockout” at the Helen Hayes Theatre in New York from May 6 to September 16 of 1979, as manic boxer Paddy Klonski from 1948. In 1980, while still going by the name “Edward O’Neil,” he had a significant role in the film “Cruising” (co-starring Al Pacino). Ed also had a cameo appearance in the 1980 film “Dogs of War.”

In 1982, Ed auditioned for the main role on “Cheers.” Before the plot changed, Ed was supposed to portray the role of Sam Malone, who was a football player. The character eventually went to Ted Danson, who was cast as a baseball pitcher when producers recast the part. Ed was also in the running for the main roles in “Family Ties” (“You could not find a person who was wronger for the job!”) and “Hill Street Blues,” a show he wasn’t too fond of.

Before appearing in “Of Mice and Men” in a Connecticut theater, Ed had several little and large parts in TV movies. There, a network executive from a brand-new channel named FOX was there. In response to what he saw, he invited Ed to try out for the pilot episode of the network’s first comedy. In spite of his aversion to the genre, Ed went through with an audition for a comedy in the hopes of working for only six episodes to earn some Christmas money.

The Pilot screenplay he read was humorous and fresh in his opinion. As a result of his performance, he was invited back for a second round of auditions. Ed had second thoughts about going. He handed the script on to his wife, who began laughing as she read it. This is when Ed decided he needed to play Al Bundy. Indeed, no one else could have handled the role better.

Even though Ed thinks the Married with Children premiere was well received, he still anticipates the series to end after just six episodes. Forget the previous eleven years, the first season of MWC (which consisted of just 13 episodes) proved Ed incorrect about the show’s viability. Al Bundy became a blue-collar icon on American television by the fourth season.

During the eleven years that MWC was in existence, Ed appeared in a wide variety of films. In January of 1990, he was also the host of Saturday Night Live. He made history as the first celebrity from FOX to anchor Saturday Night Live. Ed’s presence in both films (for which he is given the unique ‘and’ credit) may have been promoted by a “Wayne’s World” comedy on this program.

Cathy featured on MWC twice: first in 1988 (“Just Married… With Children” [220]) and again in 1991. If Al had a hammer…”[603]” The rumors that Ed and Christina Applegate were having an affair first surfaced in 1991, when a piece appeared in one of the gossip magazines. Ed found it funny, while Christina found it horrifying.(By the way, that wasn’t true.)

At first, Ed was set to star in “Flight Of The Intruder,” but when viewers saw a preview, they reacted negatively to the revelation that he would be playing “Al Bundy in the army,” thus he was removed from the cast.In 1992 and 1993, Ed was nominated for Golden Globes, an honor that, because to the nature of MWC, never led to a victory. The MWC has never been recognized by the awarding bodies.
