Feist Bio, Life, and Career:

Leslie Feist, better known by her stage name Feist, is a Canadian indie pop singer-songwriter and guitarist who has performed both as a solo artist and as a member of the indie rock group Broken Social Scene.  Feist was born on February 13, 1976, and is known mononymously as Feist.Monarch, which Feist released in 1999, marked the beginning of her successful solo music career. Her second studio album, Let It Die (2004) and The Reminder (2007), was both commercially and critically successful, selling over 2.5 million copies combined. Let It Die was released in 2004, and The Reminder was released in 2007.

Feist has been recognized with four Grammy nominations thanks to the success of her album “The Reminder,” one of which was for “Best New Artist.”  She is the recipient of eleven Juno Awards, two of which are for Artist of the Year. Metals, her fourth album recorded in a studio, was released in the year 2011. In 2012, metal band Mastodon and alternative singer/songwriter Feist worked together on a split EP and simultaneously released an interactive music video. Leslie Feist was born on February 13th, 1976 in the town of Amherst, which is located in the province of Nova Scotia, Canada. Both of her parents are creative types.

Her American-Canadian abstract expressionist painter father, Harold Feist, was a professor of fine arts at Mount Allison University in Sackville, New Brunswick. He was born in the United States.  Her mother, Lyn Feist, hailed from Saskatchewan and studied ceramics during her time there. After the birth of their first child, Ben, the family decided to make the journey to Sackville.  Moreover, Feist is the niece of guitarist Dan Achen, who was a member of the rock band Junkhouse in the 1990s and had also produced for a variety of artists (Achen died in 2010 due to a heart attack).

Feist began her career in the music industry in 1991, at the age of 15, when she founded the Calgary punk band Placebo and served as the lead vocalist for the band (not to be confused with the English band Placebo). She and the other members of her band won a local Battle of the Bands competition, and as a result, they were given the opportunity to perform as the opening act for the festival Infest 1993, which featured the Ramones. At this concert, she was introduced to Brendan Canning, a member of the band head that had performed immediately before her own band, and 10 years later, the two of them became members of Broken Social Scene together.

In 1995, Feist was forced to take a break from her singing career in order to heal from damage to her vocal cords. In 1996, she uprooted her life and moved from Calgary to Toronto. In that same year, Noah Mintz of hHead approached her with the proposition of having her play bass for his solo project Noah’s Arkweld. In spite of the fact that she had never played bass before, she spent an entire year playing the bass guitar for Noah’s Arkweld. She joined the band By Divine Right in 1998 and went on tour with them in 1998, 1999, and 2000.

She held the position of rhythm guitarist throughout those years. Although she was never considered a full-fledged member of Bodega, she did play guitar for the band at a few of their live concerts. In 1999, Feist relocated to an apartment in Queen West, located above Come As You Are, where she shared the space with Merrill Nisker, a friend of a friend who was just beginning her career as an electro-punk musician at the time.  Feist used a sock puppet and introduced herself as “Bitch Lap Lap” while working the backstage area during Peaches’ performances.

She did this while working at Peaches’ events.  In addition, between the years 2000 and 2001, the pair went on tour together in England, where they stayed with Justine Frischmann of Elastica and MIA.  Feist made a cameo appearance on an episode of The Teaches of Peaches as a guest vocalist. Feist has a cameo appearance in the music video for Peaches’ song “Lovertits,” in which she can be seen caressing and kissing a bicycle. In later years, Feist recorded a cover of this song alongside Gonzales (whom she had met while on tour with Peaches), and it was included on Open Season.

In 2006, Feist provided backup vocals for a single by the name of “Give ‘Er,” which was included on the album Impeach My Bush by Peaches. Feist made the announcement that her live Multitudes residency would commence in Europe in the summer of 2021 in the month of June 2021.  It featured live shows in Hamburg, Ottawa, and Toronto and included new songs despite not being accompanied by the release of a new album.  The style of Multitudes as a traditional, intimate, and communal experience for smaller audiences was an idea that Feist and designer Rob Sinclair co-designed. The show was initially planned to complement the publication of Pleasure.
