Isiah Thomas Bio, Life, and Career:

Isiah Lord Thomas III, better known as “Zeke,” was born in the United States on April 30, 1961. He is a former professional basketball player, as well as a coach, and currently works as an analyst for NBA TV. The 12-time NBA All-Star was elected into the Naismith Memorial Basketball Hall of Fame and named to the NBA’s 50th and 75th-anniversary teams. In addition, he was named to the NBA’s 50th-anniversary squad. His whole career in the National Basketball Association (NBA) was spent with the Detroit Pistons, where he was a member of the team for its entirety. Thomas is universally acknowledged as one of the best players and point guards in the history of the sport.

After playing collegiate basketball for the Indiana Hoosiers and helping them win the 1981 NCAA title as a sophomore, Thomas declared for the NBA draft and went on to have a professional basketball career. In the 1981 NBA draft, the Pistons selected him with the second overall pick. He went on to play his whole career for the Pistons, during which time he was a key member of the “Bad Boys” team that won the NBA title in both 1988–1989 and 1989–1990.

After retiring from playing basketball, he went on to work as an executive with the Toronto Raptors, as a television pundit, as an executive for the Continental Basketball Association, as the head coach of the Indiana Pacers, and as both an executive and head coach for the New York Knicks. After that, he coached the men’s basketball team for the Golden Panthers of Florida International University (FIU) for three seasons, beginning in 2009 and continuing through 2012. At the beginning of May 2015, Thomas was named president and part owner of the New York Liberty, which is the WNBA sister team of the New York Knicks.

This came after the re-hiring of Thomas’s former teammate from the Detroit Pistons, Bill Laimbeer, as the team’s coach. This decision was met with controversy. His travel to Our Lady of Sorrows School and St. Joseph High School in Westchester, both located in Westchester, took him a total of ninety minutes each way. As a junior, while playing for St. Joseph and under the direction of coach Gene Pingatore, he led the team to the state championships. As a result, he was regarded as one of the most promising college prospects in the country.

Thomas was sought out by Bob Knight and the Indiana Hoosiers to participate in their college basketball program. Despite the fact that he received correspondence claiming that Knight had his players tied up and beaten them, he did not believe the accusations. When Indiana’s head coach came to visit the Thomas family, one of Isiah’s brothers insulted him and got into a yelling argument with him. Isiah’s brother wanted him to attend DePaul, so he embarrassed him in front of the Indiana coach. Despite this, Thomas’s mother decided to send him to Knight and Indiana because she believed that both the move to Bloomington and the strict upbringing that Knight would provide would be beneficial to her son.

Thomas was forced to make a speedy adjustment to Knight’s authoritarian mode of operation. During the 1979 Pan American Games, which were held in Puerto Rico, Knight became so enraged with Thomas that he threatened to send him back to the United States. Knight remembered saying to the student who would be entering the freshman class, “You ought to go to DePaul, Isiah because you sure as hell aren’t going to be an Indiana player playing like that.” Before the beginning of Thomas’ freshman year, the 1979–1980 season, Knight had reached such a point of annoyance with Thomas that he had to send him packing from a practice. Thomas claims that Knight was trying to make the point that no player, regardless of how talented they are, can be considered more important than Knight’s ideology.

Thomas rapidly demonstrated his abilities as a player, and he quickly became a fan favorite among supporters of both the Knights and Indiana. Because of his superior abilities, Knight was finally forced to modify his approach to tutoring. His devoted followers gave him the moniker “Mr. Wonderful” and displayed bedsheets printed with passages from the Book of Isaiah, such as “And a little child shall lead them.” Thomas’s height of 6 feet and one inch (1.85 meters), which is considered to be on the shorter end of collegiate basketball, earned him the nickname “Pee Wee” from his coach, Knight. The Hoosiers were led by Thomas and Mike Woodson to victory in the Big Ten tournament, where they went on to compete in the 1980 Sweet Sixteen.

The next year, during the 1980–1981 season, Knight promoted Thomas to the position of captain and instructed him to direct play on the floor. Because Thomas’s response was so positive, Knight was able to develop a friendship with him as the season progressed. During a match between the two teams in Bloomington, one of the Purdue players threw a cheap shot at Thomas.

In response, Knight convened a press conference to protect his star player. And then, 19 days later, when Thomas hit an Iowa player and was ejected from a game, Knight didn’t condemn him at all even though the incident happened In the season in question, Thomas and the Hoosiers were victorious in both their conference tournament and the 1981 NCAA tournament, giving Indiana University its fourth national championship overall.  As a result of his performance in the competition, the sophomore was named the tournament’s Most Outstanding Player and became eligible for the upcoming NBA draft.
