Jason Kidd Bio, Life, and Career:

Jason Frederick Kidd is an American professional basketball coach and former player who now serves as the head coach for the Dallas Mavericks of the National Basketball Association (NBA). Kidd was born on March 23, 1973, in the United States. Kidd was a member of the NBA All-Star Game ten times, the All-NBA First Team five times, and the NBA All-Defensive Team nine times. He is widely regarded as one of the best point guards and passers in the history of the sport.

He was a member of the Dallas Mavericks when they won the National Basketball Association championship in 2011, and he was a part of the United States national team that won gold medals in the Olympics in 2000 and 2008 respectively. The Naismith Memorial Basketball Hall of Fame acknowledged his accomplishments as a player by inducting him. Kidd was selected for inclusion on the NBA 75th Anniversary Team in October 2021, a distinction that recognized him as one of the most accomplished players in the history of the league.

Kidd was selected by the Dallas Mavericks in the first round of the 1994 NBA draft after playing college basketball for the California Golden Bears. He was the second overall pick in the draft. During his first year with the Mavericks, he was honored with a share of the NBA Rookie of the Year award alongside Grant Hill. After that, Kidd was a member of the Phoenix Suns from 1996 until 2001, and then he was a member of the New Jersey Nets from 2001 until 2008.

He guided the Nets to back-to-back appearances in the NBA Finals in 2002 and 2003 under his leadership. Kidd was dealt back to Dallas in the middle of the 2007–2008 campaign for some players. Kidd earned his first and only NBA title in 2011 as Dallas prevailed over Miami in the championship series. He was 38 years old at the time. It was in 2013 with the New York Knicks that he put an end to his playing career. After moving from New Jersey to Brooklyn the previous season, he took over as head coach of the Nets in the next year’s campaign.

After just one year with the team, he was dealt to the Milwaukee Bucks and coached there for the next four seasons before being let go in the middle of the 2018 campaign. After taking a year off, he became an assistant coach for the Los Angeles Lakers, the team with whom he won the NBA championship in 2020. He then returned to the Mavericks organization in 2021 to take over as head coach of the franchise, and in his first year with the team, they advanced all the way to the Western Conference Finals.

Kidd’s ability to dish the ball and grab rebounds made him a triple-double threat on a consistent basis. When he retired, he was rated third all-time in the NBA for regular-season triple-doubles with a career total of 107 and third in postseason triple-doubles with a career total of 11 for the duration of his career. He is now ranked second on the NBA all-time list for career assists and steals, while also holding the 13th spot on the list for most three-point field goals made. Kidd was raised in an Oakland neighborhood that belongs to the upper middle class. He was born in San Francisco.

His mother, Anne, is of Irish-American descent, while his father, Steve, was of African-American descent. Kidd was a highly sought-after prospect for AAU teams and tournaments when he was younger, and he won a number of different all-star and MVP titles. He went to school at the East Oakland Youth Development Center and spent a lot of time playing basketball at the city courts of Oakland, where he frequently competed against Gary Payton, who would later be inducted into the NBA Hall of Fame.

Kidd led the Pilots to consecutive state titles while attending St. Joseph Notre Dame High School in Alameda, California. Under the direction of coach Frank LaPorte, Kidd led the Pilots to the title by averaging 25 points, 10 assists, 7 rebounds, and 7 steals during his senior season. During that same year, he was also recognized as the Player of the Year by PARADE and USA Today, in addition to receiving a number of other individual distinctions, including the Naismith Award, which is given to the high school basketball player who is considered to be the best in the country.

Kidd was selected as the California Player of the Year for the second year in a row and was also named to the McDonald’s All-American team. He holds the all-time prep record with 1,155 assists and is the seventh-highest career scorer in the state with 2,661 points. Kidd was recognized as one of the 35 greatest McDonald’s All-Americans on January 31, 2012, and received the award.

After a highly publicized recruiting process, Kidd shocked many fans and pundits alike by choosing to attend the nearby University of California, Berkeley over a number of top-ranked collegiate programs including the University of California, Los Angeles, the University of Arizona, the University of Kentucky, the University of Kansas, and Ohio State University. The school had just come off a 10–18 season and had not won a conference title since 1960.
