Jerry West Bio, Life and Career:

Jerome Alan West was born on May 28th, 1938. He was a professional basketball player in the National Basketball Association (NBA) who played for the Los Angeles Lakers. His nicknames included “Mr. Clutch”, for his ability to make a big play in a key situation such as his famous buzzer-beating 60-foot shot that tied Game 3 of the 1970 NBA Finals against the New York Knicks; “the Logo”, in reference to his silhouette being the basis for the NBA logo; “Mr. Outside”, in reference to his perimeter play with the Los Angeles Lakers and “Zeke from Cabin Creek” for the creek near his birthplace of Chelyan, West Virginia.

Early in his career, West was a standout at the small forward position. He was a standout at East Bank High School and at West Virginia University, where he led the Mountaineers to the 1959 NCAA championship game. West played this position for the first few years of his career.

Despite their elimination from the tournament, he was named the Most Outstanding Player of the NCAA Final Four. After that, he began a career with the Los Angeles Lakers and served as the co-captain of the United States basketball team that won the gold medal at the 1960 Olympics.

This team was elected into the Naismith Memorial Basketball Hall of Fame as a collective unit in the year 2010. West was born in Chelyan, West Virginia, into a family that did not have a lot of money. He was the fifth kid out of a total of six to be born to Cecil Sue West, a housewife, and Howard Stewart West, an electrician who worked in a coal mine.

West has revealed that for a period of time, he slept with a loaded shotgun under his bed out of concern that he might have to kill his father in self-defense. This worry was brought on by the fact that West’s father physically assaulted him.

When West was younger, he was a child who was outgoing and confrontational. However, in 1951, his older brother David was killed in action in the Korean War. The grief caused by this event caused West to become a reserved and introverted child. Due to the fact that he was so feeble, little, and weak, his doctor gave him numerous vitamin injections on a regular basis and kept him away from children’s sports so that he wouldn’t sustain any significant injuries.

When West was a kid, he would spend his time outdoors hunting and fishing, but his favorite thing to do was shoot hoops at a basketball hoop that a neighbor had attached to the side of his storage shed. West spent his days practicing his basket shooting from every conceivable angle, oblivious to the muck and snow in the backyard as well as his mother’s reprimands for his tardiness when he returned home many hours after dinner.

After West’s graduation from East Bank High School in 1956, he received interest from over sixty different colleges and universities. In the end, he made the decision to continue his education in his own state by enrolling at West Virginia University (WVU), which is situated in Morgantown.

During his first year at West Virginia University (1956–1957), West was a member of the WVU freshmen squad that went unbeaten during the whole season, compiling a record of 17 wins and 0 losses;  other members of the team were Jay Jacobs and Willie Akers. During his first year on varsity under the direction of head coach Fred Schaus, West averaged 17.8 points and 11.1 rebounds per game.

He also started in all 28 games and shot 49.6% from the field and 73.2% from the free throw line. As a result of his performances, he was selected for a number of different honor teams, including the All-American Third Team, the First Team All-Southern Conference, the Most Valuable Player Award and First Team honors at the Southern Conference Tournament, the Chuck Taylor–Converse Second Team All-Americans, the Associated Press, and United Press International Third Team All-Americans, and the Chuck Taylor–Converse Second Team All-Americans.

That year, the Mountaineers finished the season with a record of 26–2, however, they were eliminated from playoff tournament play by Manhattan College. West decided to put his name in the hat for the NBA draft in 1960, and he was selected by the Minneapolis Lakers as the second overall choice. This was just a few months before the Lakers moved their operations to Los Angeles.

West was the very first player ever selected in a draft by the newly relocated franchise. The same person who coached him in college was hired to coach the Lakers. In contrast to West’s position as a forward during his time in college, he played West as a guard.

Elgin Baylor, a forward who would go on to become a Hall of Famer, commanded the Lakers and was assisted by centers Jim Krebs and Ray Felix, forwards Rudy LaRusso and Tom Hawkins, and guards Rod Hundley (also from West Virginia), Frank Selvy, and Bobby Leonard. Baylor was the team’s captain.
