Jimmy Akin Bio, Life and Career:
Jimmy Akin is a podcast host and an advocate for the Catholic Church in the United States. As a former atheist who later converted to Catholicism, he currently holds the position of director of apologetics and evangelism at Catholic Answers. Jimmy Akin was raised a nominal Protestant during his childhood in Texas, where he was born. At the age of twenty he had a life-changing encounter with Jesus Christ. Jimmy began an in-depth study of the Bible with the intention of one day serving as a Protestant minister or teaching at a seminary.
However, the deeper he dove into the text, the more he discovered that it provided support for the Catholic faith. In the end, he felt driven by his conscience to become a member of the Catholic Church, which he did in the year 1992. His testimony of his spiritual awakening, titled “A Triumph and a Tragedy,” may be found in the book Surprised By Truth.Jimmy Akin’s Mysterious World is a unique podcast that you should check out. Despite its fantasy subject matter, it is overwhelmingly popular and, to my pleasant surprise, staunchly Catholic.
Mysterious World is a podcast that, in contrast to other popular and more conventional Catholic podcasts like Father Mike Schmitz’s The Bible in a Year, discusses topics related to theology as well as anything that may be loosely referred to as “the paranormal.” It is the same as if Art Bell, the late, iconic host of the all-night Coast-to-Coast AM radio program that discussed comparable topics, were broadcasting today on a Catholic media network. Jimmy Akin and Domenico Bettinelli, who are also the show’s co-presenters, came up with the idea for Mysterious World.
According to Bettinelli, “there are a lot of strong and successful podcasts that have a single voice that presents the content.” “At StarQuest (SQPN), the company that produces the podcast, we always have at least two individuals on our broadcasts, and occasionally we have even more. The back-and-forth exchanges that occur throughout a discussion create an atmosphere that is both natural and interesting.
And because of the role I play on the show, I get the opportunity to represent the listeners in the hopes that I can ask Jimmy the question that has come to mind for them at the exact moment that they would have asked it. In addition, the enthusiasm and awe that I demonstrate during the presentations are entirely authentic. It’s not uncommon for me to feel the same level of fascination, astonishment, and curiosity as any of our listeners.
One has a sneaking suspicion that the element of the unexpected is what draws in and keeps viewers interested. With an average of 80,000 downloads per episode, Mysterious World is now a Top 20 documentary podcast on the charts maintained by Apple Podcasts in the United States. In reference to the audience, Akin says, “The thing that surprised me the most was when we broke into Apple’s Top 20 U.S. documentary podcasts and when we started hearing from parents about how much they and their children were loving the show.”
Akin is a Senior Apologist at Catholic Answers, a member on the Catholic Answers Speakers Bureau, a weekly guest on the global radio program Catholic Answers Live, a contributing editor for Catholic Answers Magazine, and the author of numerous publications, such as the books Mass Confusion, The Salvation Controversy, The Fathers Know Best, and Mass Revision. He is also a contributing editor for Catholic Answers Magazine. Catholic Answers Magazine is broadcast worldwide.
In addition, the audience of Mysterious World is not limited to members of the Catholic faith. According to Akin, “We do get a lot of great response from people of different faith perspectives,” and this feedback is really encouraging. “We’ve heard from a few Christians that it’s one of the few faith-based shows that their friends who don’t share their beliefs find to be genuinely engaging. Others have written to say that, despite the fact that they are not believers, they value the perspectives that we express on the show as well as the balanced and charitable approach in which we examine viewpoints with which we differ.
Then, how does the Mysterious World decide what to cover in its wide-ranging articles? Akin explains, “I’ve got a spreadsheet where I keep a list of subjects,” and he elaborates further: “At the moment, it has more than 1,500 different potential topics for the future. When I’m preparing the program, one of my goals is to have a diverse selection of things to cover each month. For instance, we could have a show that focuses on a historical mystery, followed by a show that focuses on a supernatural mystery, followed by a show that focuses on a biblical mystery, followed by a show that focuses on an extraterrestrial mystery.
This manner, there would be something that appeals to each and every person.” When it comes to the varied topics covered in the podcast, Akin doesn’t see any issues with jumping from talking about werewolves one week to talking about biblical archaeology the next. He makes the observation that “Christians are just as interested in strange issues as anyone else.” It is very evident that Akin takes great pleasure in surprise his audience with topics that, at first glance, may not appear riveting; yet, it is his responsibility to make these topics fascinating.
Finding intriguing secrets that people haven’t heard of and then being able to share them with others is one of the things I appreciate about doing the show. It is also my pledge to the viewers that I won’t make an episode on a topic unless I think it interesting. If I don’t find a topic intriguing, I won’t produce an episode on it. That serves as a litmus test for me to determine whether or not I believe that it will be interesting to other people.
