John Dehlin Bio, Life, and Career:

John Parkinson Dehlin is a podcast host from the United States of America. He was previously a member of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints but was excommunicated from the organization (LDS Church). He has a Doctor of Philosophy degree in Psychology. Dehlin is the creator of the Mormon Stories Podcast in addition to a number of other podcasts, blogs, and websites centered on the Mormon faith.

He was a significant early contributor and participant in the Mormon blogosphere, and he currently blogs at Patheos.com. He has been an advocate for the rights of LGBT people, equality for women, skeptics within Mormonism, and several other unique ideas that are outside of the mainstream of Mormonism. He went to Brigham Young University (BYU) in Provo, Utah, despite having been born in Boise, Idaho, and having spent his childhood in Katy, Texas.

In 1993, he received his Bachelor of Arts degree in Summa Cum Laude with a concentration in political science. In 2007, Dehlin was also successful in completing the requirements for the Master of Science degree in Instructional Technology. Utah State University awarded him a doctorate in clinical and counseling psychology in the year 2015 after he completed his coursework there.

After receiving his degree, Dehlin spent the next five years working as a consultant for Bain & Company, Arthur Andersen, Citicorp, Heidrick & Struggles, and the LDS Church in addition to working in the software industry. After that, he spent seven years working at Microsoft, where his responsibilities included product demos, marketing, voice technologies, and developer programs.

In 2004, Dehlin relocated to Logan, Utah, to begin working on OpenCourseWare-related initiatives at Utah State University (USU), where he was to be supervised by David A. Wiley. OpenCourseWare would be promoted to other universities during Dehlin’s tenure as USU’s OpenCourseWare Consortium Coordinator and Director of Outreach for the Center for Open and Sustainable Learning, which would last for two years.

Following that, Dehlin would spend a few years leading the OpenCourseWare Consortium at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology. In January 2007, MIT selected Dehlin to lead the OpenCourseWare Consortium in the capacity of Director.  During the early stages of his work, while Dehlin was building massive open online courses (MOOCs), he expanded out into new media with a Latter-day Saint theme.

To address the limited internet presence that constructive Mormon intellectual sources had at the time, Dehlin approached the Sunstone Education Foundation and gave a presentation to its Board of Directors about the significance of participating in developing internet communities through blogging and podcasting. His goal was to address the issue. The Board decided to take him up on his offer to launch these programs.

Additionally, Dehlin joined the Board of Directors in September 2005 and simultaneously launched a Sunstone podcast in addition to the SunstoneBlog. In July 2007, he was also appointed to the position of executive director of the Sunstone Education Foundation. In this role, he was tasked with focusing on strategic projects that would reinforce Sunstone’s status as an open forum for problems related to Mormonism.

While serving in that capacity, he strove to improve the organization’s focus on its time-honored motto, “faith seeking understanding,” and he also made efforts to recruit new members who were younger in age. In January of 2008, Dehlin resigned from his position at Sunstone. In September 2005, after having doubts about his faith and subsequently finding reasons to remain a member of the LDS Church, Dehlin created the Mormon Stories podcast as an open discussion of Mormon issues with the intention of giving listeners reasons to remain in the church.

He did this in the hope that other listeners will have similar experiences and find reasons to remain in the church. Mormon Stories mostly relied on interviews to provide light on a wide range of Mormon experiences and points of view. Mormon Stories has been presented in a variety of settings, one of which being a radio broadcast on KVNU in the city of Logan, Utah.

Dehlin’s internal struggle with whether or not to proceed with Mormon Stories caused him to abandon and then pick up the project on multiple occasions. In January 2010, Dehlin picked up where he left off with his blog and podcast, concentrating on times of spiritual crisis and mental illness. The podcast has had a wide variety of well-known guests on it, starting with conversations with Joanna Brooks and John C. Hamer.

Dan Wotherspoon, a former editor of Sunstone magazine, and Natasha Helfer Parker, a certified clinical marriage and family therapist, were the other two regular hosts who assisted Dehlin in conducting interviews for the podcast. Dehlin is the host of the podcast. Mormon Matters was initially launched by Dehlin as a blog and a weekly podcast in June of 2007.

The format consisted of a panel debate about the events, culture, politics, and spirituality that are prevalent in Mormonism. Although the show eventually had trouble keeping regular conservative LDS panelists, the intention was always for the panelists to represent multiple perspectives on each issue.

At the beginning of 2008, Dehlin shifted the focus of Mormon Matters away from producing new podcast episodes and instead shifted it to a communal blog. On March 5, 2011, Dehlin brought back the Mormon Matters podcast. At that time, Dan Wotherspoon was serving as the show’s host, and Joanna Brooks was serving as a frequent co-host.
