Joy Behar Bio, Life and Career:
Josephine Victoria “Joy” Behar is an American comedian, television personality, actor, and writer. Her full name is Josephine Victoria “Joy” Behar (née Occhiuto). She is the only original member of the panel who continues to make frequent appearances on the ABC daytime talk show The View, which she co-hosts. She hosted The Joy Behar Show on HLN from 2009 until 2011, and Joy Behar: Say Anything! on Current TV from 2012 until August 2013, when the channel switched formats.
Late Night Joy, which was Behar’s most recent weekly late-night chat program, debuted on TLC in the year 2015. Additionally, she is the author of “The Great Gasbag: An A–Z Study Guide to Surviving in the World of Trump.” Josephine Victoria Occhiuto gave birth to Behar in Williamsburg, Brooklyn, in 1942. She was the only child of her parents, who were devout Roman Catholics of Italian heritage.
Both of her parents worked in the garment industry; her mother, Rose (née Carbone), was a seamstress, and her father, Gino Occhiuto, was a truck driver for Coca-Cola. In 1964, Behar received a Bachelor of Arts degree in sociology from Queens College. Two years later, in 1966, he received a Master of Arts degree in English education from Stony Brook University.
She was an English teacher at Lindenhurst Senior High School in Lindenhurst, New York, from the late 1960s until the early 1970s. Lindenhurst is located on Long Island. At the HB Studio, she received training in acting. Behar began her work in the entertainment industry in the early 1980s as a receptionist for Good Morning America, where she later became a producer for the show.
She was a stand-up comedian and made appearances on ABC’s Good Morning America and The New Show, a Lorne Michaels NBC project that was only on the air for a limited time. Way Off Broadway was a variety chat show that she hosted in 1987 on Lifetime Television. Larry David was a writer and performer on the show. In addition to that, she was a host on the show Live from Queens, a regular on the show Baby Boom on NBC, and she remained active in the comedy club scene.
Cookie, This Is My Life, and Manhattan Murder Mystery were among the films in which she appeared in supporting roles. At the beginning of the 1990s, she was the host of a talk program that aired on the 77 WABC radio station in New York City. In addition, she has been seen in the comedy specials “One Night Stand” and “Women of the Night 2,” both shown on HBO. Behar was one of the first panelists on Barbara Walters’ daytime chat show The View, which aired on ABC and was co-created by Walters.
Behar joined the show in 1997. Behar’s initial appearances on the show were limited to the times when Walters was absent; but, over time, she was promoted to the role of permanent co-host. Behar served as the host of a segment called “Joy’s Comedy Corner” on occasion. In this segment, she showcased both well-known and upcoming comedians.
Behar and the four co-hosts of the show, Whoopi Goldberg, Elisabeth Hasselbeck, Sherri Shepherd, and Barbara Walters, received a Daytime Emmy Award for Outstanding Talk Show Host in August 2009. This victory came after the show had been nominated for the award for more than a decade.
Behar’s departure from the show was confirmed on March 7, 2013, and she is expected to leave at the end of the current season. She said in an interview with Deadline that “it seemed like the ideal time…You get to a point where you have to ask yourself, ‘Do I want to keep doing this?’ I’ve been working on a play, but I haven’t been performing stand-up comedy as much as I should be since I have so much more on my plate. On her final broadcast, which aired on August 9, 2013, the program paid tribute to Behar in a fashion similar to that of the show This Is Your Life.
After leaving the show in 2013, Behar continued to make appearances as a guest co-host throughout the years 2014 and 2015. ABC made the announcement on August 25, 2015, that Behar would be returning to the show in her regular role as a co-host beginning with the launch of the nineteenth season on September 8, 2015. Behar is reported to have said something along the lines of “Just when I thought I was out, they pulled me back in.”
In addition to that, Steve was growing weary of congratulating me each time I shared my viewpoint. But I’m relieved to be back in my own place. And I’m looking forward to adding my two cents to the heated debates, particularly now that Hillary and Donald Trump are in the public eye.
Behar made reference to contender Kelley Johnson’s wardrobe during her monologue when they were talking about the 89th Miss America pageant in 2015. She questioned why Kelley Johnson was wearing “a doctor’s stethoscope,” which was part of her outfit. Behar’s comment, along with those of her other co-host Michelle Collins, led to immediate criticism from the nursing profession on social media, including the use of the hashtag #NursesUnite. Later, Behar and Collins discussed the matter while they were live on air.
As a direct consequence of this, a number of businesses withdrew their sponsorship of the series. In 2018, while discussing the remarks made by television personality Omarosa about the religiosity of United States Vice President Mike Pence, Behar stated: “It’s one thing to talk to Jesus, and it’s another thing when Jesus talks to you. Hearing voices is a symptom commonly associated with mental illness if I’m not mistaken.
Following this, the content analysis organization Media Research Center initiated a campaign in which they demanded an apology from Behar and encouraged viewers to do the same. This resulted in 40,000 calls being placed to ABC as well as 6,000 complaints being directed at the show’s advertisers. Pence personally reacted to the show, and in his response, he accused it of showing “religious intolerance.”
The Chief Executive Officer of The Walt Disney Company, Bob Iger, later announced that Behar had personally apologized to Pence for her comments. On March 13, she offered an apology on live for what she had said, saying, “I think Vice President Pence is right; I was raised to respect everyone’s religious faith, and I fell short of that.” I want to offer my genuine apology for the things that I have uttered.
In 1965, Behar wed Joe Behar, who was a lecturer at a college. They finalized their divorce in 1981. They are the parents of one child, and her name is Eve Behar Scotti. Behar’s grandson goes by the name of Luca. Behar started dating Steve Janowitz in the year 1982, and the couple tied the knot in 2011.
