Joy Harden Bradford Bio, Life, and Career:

Joy Harden Bradford is an African American clinical psychologist who was born in 1979 and currently works in the city of Atlanta, Georgia. She is best known as the founder of a mental health platform called Therapy for Black Girls, which also includes a podcast with the same name. This platform specializes in mental health issues that are relevant to black women and was given the name Therapy for Black Girls. She also has a podcast with the same name. As of this year (2019), each episode of the podcast has been downloaded more than two million times.

Paincourtville, Louisiana, is where Harden Bradford spent his childhood. She started her education at Xavier University in Louisiana, where she earned her bachelor’s degree, and continued her education at Arkansas State University, where she earned her master’s degree in vocational rehabilitation counseling. At the University of Georgia, she studied counseling psychology for her dissertation and earned a Ph.D. degree. Her affiliation with the Alpha Kappa Alpha sorority is well-known.

Since 2011, she has worked in the field of mental health as a practitioner, and from 2011 to 2014, she served as a college counselor until founding Therapy for Black Girls in 2014. She got the idea for the moniker while she was watching Black Girls Rock! on BET and it stuck with her.

In an interview with The Huffington Post, she explained that the reason why she wanted to establish the platform was that “I wanted to discuss topics such as how not getting enough sleep can have an effect on your mental health or how the number of hours you spend on Instagram can actually cause you to have negative feelings about yourself… I do not believe that we do an excellent job of focusing on mental well-being and recognizing that we all have mental health that we are required to take care of all the time. The platform consists of a blog, a podcast, a Facebook group called the Thrive Tribe, and a directory of mental health therapists.

Therapy for Black Girls is also the name of the blog and podcast. The podcast discusses a wide range of issues that are pertinent to Black women, such as readjusting to life after a divorce, as well as current cultural issues, such as how to create your own “hot girl summer.” The artwork of Harden Bradford draws attention to the social stigma associated with mental illness in the African American community as well as the necessity for black women to establish personal boundaries.
