Joy Reid Bio, Life and Career:

Joy-Ann M. Lomena-Reid, better known by her professional name Joy Reid, was born on December 8, 1968, in the United States. She is a national correspondent for MSNBC, a liberal political analyst, an author, and a host on cable television. In 2018, The New York Times wrote that “Ms. Reid, the daughter of immigrants, has emerged as a ‘heroine’ of the anti-Trump’resistance’.” She anchored the weekly morning show AM Joy on MSNBC. The book, titled The Man Who Sold America: Trump and the Unraveling of the American Story, was released by her in the year 2019.

MSNBC made the announcement on July 9, 2020, that Reid will host The ReidOut, a new weekly show based in Washington that would air at 7 p.m. Eastern time. This time slot had been vacant since March when Hardball presenter Chris Matthews announced his retirement. Joy-Ann Lomena Reid was born in Brooklyn, New York City, in the United States. Her mother was a college professor and nutritionist from Guyana, while her father was from the Democratic Republic of the Congo.

Her father was from the Democratic Republic of the Congo. Her parents first connected with one another while they were both attending graduate school at the University of Iowa in Iowa City. Reid was brought up in a Methodist household, and he has a brother and a sister. Her father was an engineer and spent a significant portion of his time away from the family. Eventually, her parents had a divorce, and her father moved back to the Congo.

She spent most of her childhood in Denver, Colorado, until the age of 17, when her mother passed away from breast cancer. Shortly after her mother’s passing, she relocated to Flatbush, Brooklyn, to live with an aunt. In 1991, Reid received his Bachelor of Arts degree from Harvard University with an emphasis in film studies. During an interview in 2013, Reid described how her time at college was like a sudden immersion into a location that was demographically opposite from where she lived.

Specifically, she went from living in a neighborhood that was eighty percent African American to living in a community that was just six percent African American. She was forced to become accustomed to residing with people who were not members of her family, such as housemates. During her time at Harvard, she was responsible for her own tuition and costs, and she reflected that the experience was beneficial to her intellectual development.

In 1997, Reid began her career as a journalist by moving to South Florida to begin working for a morning show on WSVN Channel 7. Prior to this, she had been living in New York and worked for a business consulting firm. In 2003, she left the journalistic industry to begin working for the organization America Coming Together, whose mission was to oppose the Iraq War and President George W. Bush. She then made her way back into the industry as a talk radio personality and volunteered her time for Barack Obama’s campaign for president in 2008.

Together with “James T” Thomas, Reid hosted the morning radio talk show Wake Up South Florida, which was broadcast from Radio One’s then-Miami station WTPS, from 2006 until 2007. During that time, the show was on the air. She was a political columnist for the Miami Herald from 2003 to 2015, and she was the editor of The Reid Report political blog from 2000 to 2014. She worked as managing editor of The Grio from 2011 to 2014.

Between the months of February 2014 and February 2015, Reid served as the host of her very own afternoon cable news show on MSNBC called The Reid Report. On February 19, 2015, the show was canceled, and Reid was moved to a new role as a national correspondent for MSNBC. AM Joy, a political weekend-morning discussion show on MSNBC, was presented by Reid beginning in May of 2016, and she was a frequent substitute for other MSNBC anchors, including Chris Hayes and Rachel Maddow. As of the year 2018, Reid’s Saturday morning show had an average audience of approximately one million people per week.

Fracture: Barack Obama, the Clintons, and the Racial Divide is the title of Reid’s book, which was written in 2015 and published by HarperCollins on September 8th of that same year.

In the year 2015, Reid delivered the first-ever Ida B. Wells lecture at the Anna Julia Cooper Center on the campus of Wake Forest University.

In 2017, Reid was ranked fourth among the most tweeted journalists at each of Twitter’s top news outlets, placing him in fourth place overall. In August of that year, she was given credit by The Daily Dot for coming up with the word “KHive” to refer to followers of Kamala Harris. According to an article published in 2016, The Hollywood Reporter praised her “ability to break down complex issues in a way that makes them digestible and accessible.”[24] In 2018, The New York Times wrote that “Ms. Reid, the daughter of immigrants, has emerged as a ‘heroine’ of the anti-Trump’resistance’.”

In 2003, Reid was awarded a fellowship from the Knight Center for Specialized Journalism. During the year 2018, Reid was put forward for consideration for three NABJ Salute to Excellence Awards. One for her segment where a pastor is pulled to safety at the Charlottesville white nationalist march, for Reid’s reporting on the damage caused by the hurricanes to the US Virgin Islands, and for the segment that won her an award, Tragedy of ‘Time: The Kalief Browder Story’ where Reid sat down with Kalief’s brother Deion Browder and filmmaker Julia Mason. She was presented with the Carol Jenkins Visible and Powerful Media Award from the Women’s Media Center in the year 2016.
