Kiesza Bio, Life, and Career:

Kiesa Rae Ellestad Kiesza (born January 16, 1989) is a Canadian singer and multi-instrumentalist from the city of Calgary. Her professional name is Kiesza (/Kaz/ KY-za), and she is known by this name professionally.  She was engaged in an automobile accident in Toronto in 2017, and as a result, she sustained serious injuries that necessitated her to take a significant amount of time off to recover.  Sound of a Woman (2014) and Crave are the two CDs that she has presented to the public thus far (2020).

Kiesza was born in Calgary and has spent her entire life there. Her Norwegian ancestors gave her the surname Ellestad, which is of Norwegian origin, and her grandfather was born in Fagernes, which is also in Norway. Kiesza stated in an interview she gave to Metro that she is able to trace her ancestry back to someone who fought beside Robert the Bruce at the Battle of Bannockburn, and she elaborated on this claim by saying, “There is a sizeable population of Scots living in Canada. Tons. My grandpa was of Scottish heritage—he was of the black Douglases”.

Kiesza began her interest in sailing when she was 13 years old and continued to pursue it when she was 16 years old and enrolled in the Sail and Life Training Society (SALTS) program. She took part in the program. After that, in 2007, she began her career as a sailing instructor at the Glenmore Sailing School. One year later, she and her brother both enlisted in the Royal Canadian Navy Reserves, where she eventually attained the rank of Navigator. (Naval Communicator). She initially taught herself how to play the guitar while she was serving in the Navy and attending crew singalongs. In the meantime, she attempted to compete for the title of Miss Universe Canada. She mentioned that her time spent in the navy was the impetus behind her decision to donate 4,500 CDs to the Canadian armed forces stationed in Afghanistan in the year 2008.

Kiesza was a member of the Young Canadians, where she received training in a variety of dance styles, including jazz, tap, and theater. She also had training as a ballerina, however, a knee injury that she sustained when she was 15 put an end to her career in ballet. Kiesza stated that the breakup of her parents was the impetus for the creation of her very first song when she was eighteen years old. She did this so that she could communicate how she was feeling. The same year, she was listening to the radio when she heard one of her songs being broadcast.

Kiesza was given the opportunity to perform in front of a live audience and be broadcast live on the radio show that is hosted by Tom Coxworth of CKUA Folk Routes in 2005. Not long after that, she applied to and was granted admission to Selkirk College in Nelson, British Columbia, where she majored in keyboard, voice, and guitar studies. After that, Kiesza was fortunate enough to be awarded a scholarship to study music at the prestigious Berklee College of Music in Boston, Massachusetts.

Shortly after that, she relocated to New York City in 2010 in order to further her career as a musician. Despite the fact that she began her career primarily as a folk singer, after attending Berklee and later settling in New York, she transitioned to a more “uptempo sound,” for which she collaborated with producer Rami Samir Afuni.In the year 2010, she was given the opportunity to perform in the Canada Day celebrations that were held in Trafalgar Square in London. This event was attended by 30,000 people.

Kiesza’s first single was a “disco-infused pop” song titled “Oops” that was published in 2012. The song was about a couple that had unprotected sex and was released in 2012. Kiesza began working with Afuni in New York in 2012. At the time, she referred to the kind of music she played as “SteamPop,” which AjanWrites defines as “a blazing brew of strong, boisterous pop packed with tongue-in-cheek lyrics.”  Kiesza revealed the humorous intent behind the creation of “Oops” in a later interview in 2014. With the record label Lokal Legend, Kiesza disseminated the music video for her newest track “Hideaway” in the month of February 2014.

Idolator deemed it to be one of a kind due to the fact that it was shot in a single continuous take throughout the entirety of the music video, which took place on N 12th Street in Brooklyn, New York City. Rolling Stone contributor John Gentile referred to the style as “outstanding.”  Kiesza stated in an interview with Rolling Stone that the making of the music video was difficult for her.

This was in part due to the fact that she had broken a rib just prior to the filming of the video and “couldn’t move for an entire month afterward.”  It was introduced to the public for the first time by Annie Mac on BBC Radio 1 during her Mac’s Special Delivery segment.  On the UK Singles Chart, “Hideaway” made its debut at position number one.
