Between the years 2016 and 2020, she worked as an independent musician and published music under her own imprint, BunHead Records. In 2021, she signed a recording contract with Amigo and Republic Records. Petras began his career in the recording industry when he was a teenager.

In 2017, she made her debut on the worldwide music scene with the release of the single “I Don’t Want That at All.” After then, she released a number of singles, including “Feeling of Falling,” “Heart to Break,” and “1, 2, 3 Dayz Up,” all of which reached the Dance/Electronic Songs chart of Billboard. In 2019, Petras published both her first studio album, titled Clarity, as well as her second studio album, titled Turn Down the Light, under her own independent label.

Petras made her debut with Republic Records in 2022 with the publication of the extended play (EP) titled Slut Pop. This was her first effort after signing with the label. Petras became the first openly transgender solo artist in the United States to reach number one with her single “Unholy,” which she recorded in collaboration with Sam Smith in 2022 and released as a single. The song topped charts internationally, including the UK Singles Chart and the Billboard Hot 100. Petras was the first openly transgender musician to win a Grammy Award (for “Unholy” in 2023), and she was the second transgender woman to win a Grammy after Wendy Carlos.

In 2023, Petras won the Grammy Award for Best Pop Duo/Group Performance. Petras was born in the German city of Cologne. Her father is an architect, her mother is a dancer and an artist, and her older sister is also a vocalist. Her other sister is also a singer. Petras, who was 13 years old at the time, made an appearance on a German television current affairs show in the year 2006, during which she explained her gender change through medical means.

Petras made her first public appearances in a documentary and a talk show when she was just 14 years old, all in an effort to gain approval for gender confirmation surgery at the age of 16, two years younger than the legal age of consent in Germany, which is 18. Because of these appearances, her transformation received notice in media outlets all over the world, and she was hailed as the “youngest transsexual in the world.”

She was a model for a German hair salon chain in September of 2007 when that month took place. Following an examination by the psychiatrist in charge of the psychiatric section at Frankfurt Hospital, Dr. Bernd Meyenburg, Petras was given permission to have gender confirmation surgery when he was 16 years old;  Petras’s parents gave their consent for the procedure.

In November of 2008, Petras made the announcement that the procedure was successfully finished. The Daily Telegraph reported that at the time of her surgery, Petras was the youngest person in the world to have undergone such a procedure. She said this about her surgery: “I was asked if I feel like a woman now – but the truth is that I have always felt like a woman – I just ended up in the wrong body.” She was referring to the fact that she had undergone gender reassignment surgery.

Petras stated that the first song she ever composed was “about this dude in second grade who didn’t like me back” in an interview with BuzzFeed.Petras released a series of singles in the years 2008 and 2009 under the label Joyce Records. These tracks included “Fade Away” (2008), “Last Forever,” “Die for You,” and “Boomerang” (all 2009). In 2009, she was highlighted on Sobertruth’s track “Taste,” then in 2011, she was highlighted on the track “Magnetic.” Later the same year (2011), Petras made her debut with an extended play titled “One Piece of Tape,” which was published under the imprint Bionic Ballroom.

Petras was featured on two singles released in 2013 by German DJ Klaas. The singles were titled “Fly to Paris” and “Heartbeat.” Petras began working on a music career over the course of the subsequent few years, collaborating with various producers such as The Stereotypes, C.J. Abraham, Stephen Dresser, Johan “Jones” Wetterberg, Edward Ellis, and Aaron Joseph. She published demos of her work on her SoundCloud page, one of which was titled “STFU.”  Petras was given the position of number 19 on the Artist Chart of Billboard, which lists growing artists, in the month of July 2013, in recognition of her contributions to social media.

Petras made an appearance on Isaac Phase’s song “You,” which was released in 2015 as part of his album Phase 00001. Petras announced the release of her first song, titled “I Don’t Want It at All,” in August 2017. After that, the song made it all the way to the top of the Spotify Global Viral chart. The music video that goes along with the song had its world premiere on Vevo back in October, and it contains a cameo appearance by Paris Hilton.

During the same month, she was selected by Spotify to be one of the four artists identified as RISE Artists. This is a “program meant to identify and break the next wave of music superstars,” according to Spotify’s official description of the RISE Artist initiative. Towards the tail end of 2017, Petras was given the title of “most likely to conquer the pop charts” by Paper magazine.
