Matt Vasgersian Bio, Life and Career:

Matthew Edward “Matt” Vasgersian is a well-known television personality and sportscaster in the United States. He was born on September 28, 1967. At present, Vasgersian is working as a studio host for the MLB Network in addition to his role as a play-by-play announcer for Fox Sports’ coverage of Major League Baseball. In the past, he has worked as an announcer for NBC Sports’ coverage of the Olympic Games and Fox Sports’ coverage of the National Football League. His previous employers were the Milwaukee Brewers and the San Diego Padres, where he served as the play-by-play announcer.

As a kid, Vasgersian began his career in the entertainment industry as an actor. At the age of seven, he became a member of the Screen Actors Guild and acted in an episode of The Streets of San Francisco and the movie The Candidate, which was primarily shot in Berkeley, California. The Candidate starred Robert Redford. Vasgersian is of Armenian heritage and was born in Oakland, California. He attended Campolindo High School in Moraga, California, and then graduated from the University of Southern California in Los Angeles. He participated in The New Dating Game as a student at USC, and he ended up winning a vacation to Telluride, Colorado.

Since 1991, Vasgersian has been employed in the sport of baseball. He began his career in the sport as a play-by-play announcer in the Minor Leagues for six years. He started his career as a sportscaster with the Chicago Cubs Rookie League affiliate in Huntington, West Virginia, on radio station WKEE-AM 800. After that, he became the voice of the High Desert Mavericks, the affiliate of the Seattle Mariners, on radio station KAPL. Over the following several years, he worked for a variety of teams in a variety of different organizations, beginning with the Syracuse Chiefs in 1995 and culminating with the AAA Tucson Toros in 1996. During this time, he advanced through baseball’s minor leagues.

In 1997, when he was only 29 years old, Vasgersian was hired as the play-by-play voice for the Milwaukee Brewers. He remained in that post for five years before moving on to the San Diego Padres, where he held the same position from 2002 to 2008. When it was revealed that Vasgersian would be joining MLB Network, he had been a member of the Padres organization for seven seasons.

Channel 4 announced that Vasgersian will not be returning as a Padres announcer for the 2009 season on November 1, 2008, during their broadcast of the San Diego CIF High School Football Game of the Week. The reason for the decision was that Vasgersian wanted to explore other possibilities. Later that week, it was announced that Vasgersian had secured a contract to become the first studio presenter for MLB Network. This news came at the end of that week. In 2006, Vasgersian began his career with Fox Sports. Between 2006 and 2008, Vasgersian was a member of the number six broadcast crew for Fox NFL, where he worked with J.C. Pearson.

He has worked on a few games for the network in the prior years of his tenure there. On his CV for Fox Football, you will see that Vasgersian has worked as a commentator for BCS games, as well as the Orange Bowl (2007), the Fiesta Bowl (2008), and the Fiesta Bowl (2009). Additionally, beginning in 2007, he began working as part of the #3 broadcast crew for Fox MLB’s telecasts of the Game of the Week. In this role, he collaborated with several baseball commentators. In 2012, he started hosting the MLB pregame program. However he continued to call games on a fill-in basis even after hosting the show.

In 2014, he was sent back to the broadcast booth, where he now works with John Smoltz as a member of one of the network’s #2 broadcast teams (a job they share with Thom Brennaman and Eric Karros). In this capacity, he collaborated with Smoltz on playoff telecasts broadcast during the Division Series. In 2016, John Smoltz was promoted to the central broadcast team, and Buck Martinez replaced Matt Vasgersian as Vasgersian’s colleague for the World Series. Since the launch of MLB Network on January 1, 2009, Vasgersian has held the position of studio host there. He frequently appears both in-studio and on-site at the All-Star Game and World Series on MLB Network.

Tonight, the network’s live weekly studio program that has won an Emmy Award, as well as “Quick Pitch,” “The Rundown,” the offseason studio show “Hot Stove,” MLB Network’s Spring Training series “30 Clubs in 30 Days,” and MLB Network’s first-ever game show “Baseball IQ.” During the Major League Baseball regular season, Vasgersian is the play-by-play announcer for the Thursday Night Baseball game package broadcast on MLB Network.
