Melissa Manchester Bio, Life, and Career:

Melissa Manchester is a well-known American actress, singer, and songwriter. She was born on February 15, 1951, in the United States. Adult contemporary radio stations have played her music ever since the 1970s. Her songs are still popular today. She has also made appearances on both stage and screen, including television and movies. Manchester was born into a musical family in the borough of the Bronx, which is located in New York City.

Her father, David Manchester, spent three decades playing the bassoon for the New York Metropolitan Opera. Ruth Manchester Ltd. was one of the first companies that her mother designed and founded. Her mother was a pioneer in the fashion industry. The Manchester family comes from a Jewish background. Early on in life, Manchester decided to pursue a profession in singing.

She attended the Manhattan School of Music, where she studied the piano and the harpsichord. When she was 15 years old, she started singing jingles for commercials, and when she was 17 years old, she began working as a staff writer for Chappell Music while also attending Manhattan’s High School of Performing Arts.

When she was 19 years old, she attended New York University and studied songwriting with Paul Simon. Manchester was active in the club scene in Manhattan, and it was there that Barry Manilow, a friend of hers and a fellow singer of jingles, introduced her to Bette Midler. In 1971, she joined the Harlettes, which were the backing vocalists for Bette Midler and were founded by Manilow and her. She was one of the Harlettes.

On the track named “Magical Misery Tour” from the album National Lampoon Radio Dinner released in 1972, Manchester made a brief speaking appearance as “Yoko Ono.” She also performed as the singer in the song “Deteriorata.”The first album by Manchester, titled Home to Myself, was published in 1973. Manchester and Carole Bayer Sager collaborated on the writing of several of the songs on the album. After two years, on her album Melissa, she achieved her first top-ten hit with the song “Midnight Blue,” which stayed on the Billboard Hot 100 rankings for a total of 17 weeks. The song reached its highest position of number six during the week beginning August 9, 1975.

She gave performances of the songs “O Heaven” and “Home to Myself” in the debut episode of Ms. magazine’s television show, Woman Alive!, which aired in 1974. Woman Alive! was a program geared toward women. In 1974, she gave a live performance of the song on the television show Midnight Special, which was hosted by Burt Sugarman.

‘Come in From the Rain’ was included on Manchester’s album Better Days & Happy Endings, which was published in 1976. Since then, it has been performed by a variety of other artists, such as The Captain & Tennille, Rosemary Clooney, Vic Damone, Eydie Gorme, Shirley Horn, Cleo Laine, Peggy Lee, Carmen McRae, Jane Olivor, Liza Minnelli, Barbara Cook, Mel Torme, and Diana Ross. Others have also covered it, such as Eydie Gorme, Shirley Horn, and Cleo Laine.

As a contributor and performer, Manchester was included alongside Richie Havens, Melanie, and Frankie Valli in the 1977 NBC special documentary How the Beatles Changed the World. The documentary was broadcast on NBC. In 1978, “Whenever I Call You ‘Friend'” was a popular duet performed by Kenny Loggins and Stevie Nicks. Manchester worked along with Loggins to co-write the song. This track was included on her album Melissa Manchester, which she released in 1979.

She had a recurring role in the daytime serial opera Search for Tomorrow, broadcast on CBS-TV, in which she instructed a key character, portrayed by Michael Nouri and functioning as a singer-songwriter, on the fundamentals of his profession. 1979 saw Manchester achieve a top ten hit with her rendition of “Don’t Cry Out Loud” by Peter Allen. For this performance, she was nominated for a Grammy Award in the category of Best Pop Female Vocal Performance. Manchester was responsible for composing and recording the score for the 2001 Lady and the Tramp sequel Scamp’s Adventure, which was released only on home video.

When I Look Down That Road was Manchester’s first album since 2004, marking her return after an absence of nine years. During her tour in support of the album, she received accolades for maintaining her “powerful voice” and for “reinventing [herself] while staying true to what made [her] popular.”

She made her return to the stage in April 2007, starring in the Chicago production of HATS! The Musical. She and Sharon Vaughn each contributed two songs to the production of this musical. During the same year (2007), she collaborated with Barry Manilow to record a duet cover of the Carole King classic “You’ve Got a Friend” for inclusion on Manilow’s album titled The Greatest Songs of the Seventies. A new single by Manchester titled “The Power of Ribbons” was distributed to digital stores in the year 2008. Research into breast cancer will be helped by sales of the other singe.

In 2011, an indie film titled Dirty Girl was released. Throughout the course of the movie, many of Manchester’s songs were used, and five of those songs were included on the film’s soundtrack. In a brief appearance in which he did not speak, Manchester played the role of the pianist who accompanied the main character during her performance of “Don’t Cry Out Loud.”
