Mike Duncan Bio, Life, and Career:

Mike Duncan received his Bachelor of Arts degree in Political Science from Western Washington University. Duncan spent his childhood in the suburbs of Seattle, Washington. After finishing the podcast on the history of Rome, he went on to study public history at Texas State University. However, he ultimately decided to drop everything and move to Madison, Wisconsin, where he currently works as a diaper changer, writes short cartoon histories, and produces a podcast called Revolutions.

Mike Duncan: Instead, I began studying the history of Rome as a pastime in the year 2007. I remember thinking at the time that I was really a little bit behind the times when I started listening to podcasts since they had been around for a long. Now, many believe that I was there at the beginning of it all. I’d listened to a couple of podcasts that were very good and a few that were really not very good, and I finally said to myself, “Hey, I’m searching for some type of outlet.” At the time, I was immersed in a substantial amount of research on Roman history; hence, I reasoned that because it is possible to launch a podcast, I should do it.

Because there was no advertising available at the time, I continued doing it for another two years without actually generating any money at all. Even if people wanted to give to me, there was no connection on my website for them to do so. I believe I had been a part of the program for a period of two years before I ever put up a link that would enable people to donate money to me. That was the subject that I focused my education on. During that time, I was primarily focused on political theory; nonetheless, I found myself reading the works of ancient Greek and Latin historians just for recreational purposes.

I was reading a lot of Livy and Suetonius at the time, and I had just started reading Tacitus when I found out about it. I suppose you could say that I discovered it by accident. There were a number of tales that were concealed deep inside the body of this very dull novel. Because Polybius is so extremely lacking in excitement, no one enjoys reading it solely for the sake of passing the time. But I was reading it for pleasure; it seemed like everything that everyone knows about Roman history essentially goes from about 50 BC, which is when Caesar appears, to approximately 70 AD, which is when Nero dies. This is the time frame in which everything that anyone knows about Roman history takes place.

There’s around a century in there where it sums up pretty much all about Roman history that everyone has ever learned. If you were to ask them, “What do you know about Roman history?” most of their responses would come from the previous century and a half. Things that were going on at the time, like the Samnite Wars, are really interesting. The Punic Wars are a very interesting historical event. It was a means through which these tales might be shared with the rest of the globe. That was the actual source of where it originated.

In college, I did not study Roman history until it was required for a course on political theory. For that course, I had a lecturer who explained that Roman political philosophy consisted of things like having a good inventory and constructing highways. The one that I listened to and thought was absolutely incredible was called 12 Byzantine Rulers and was written by Lars Brownworth. I was thinking to myself, “This is amazing; all of this stuff is fresh to me.” That particular one was the one that started the gears in my head turning. While I was reading these ancient history books and listening to the podcast “12 Byzantine Rulers,” I had the notion that it would be so simple to write these things up, record them, and put them out there.

In the beginning, it was just me, an iMac, GarageBand, and the microphone that is already included in iMacs. only an inferior external microphone that is mounted on top of the display. That’s the method I used for the first ten episodes of the show. After that, I went ahead and invested in a good microphone. Since then, the only tools I’ve relied on are a MacBook, a USB mic, and GarageBand.

I strongly recommend that individuals do not make a significant financial commitment. If you are just getting started with podcasting, there is no need for you to invest in a mixing board, a soundproof studio, or any of these high-end mics right now. You will be able to achieve that in the future, but there is a lot of wiggle room with regard to how fantastic the sound will be. I performed the whole of the concert with just a laptop and a USB microphone, and I’ve never needed anything else.

Libsyn is an excellent website for hosting content, and I continue to use it now. There is a man who works at Libsyn who also handles broker advertisements, and at some point in the spring of 2009 — perhaps two years into the program — he contacted me an email. He told me that he was interested in sponsoring the podcast. He most likely saw how well the concert was performing in terms of audience attendance. He approached us with the proposition, “Hey, look, would you be interested in making commercials for the show?” When I first considered doing it, I had some reservations about it.

I did not want advertisements to compromise the quality of the material in any way. I didn’t want it to be like Crazy Al’s Used Car Lot or Mike’s Plumbing, where suddenly there would be advertisements placed on the front of the program. However, the individuals responsible for selling advertisements on podcasts are very intelligent. So originally, I listened to everything in audiobook format. This is a service that is extremely similar to what I would be doing anyhow, so I decided to provide it. The next step is for you to act as the host and read commercials. This is now the expected format for podcasts; the presenter typically reads the advertisement content himself. Which is wonderful. Rather than imposing someone else’s conception of what an advertisement should be, you should accomplish it in this manner instead.

They then approached me and said, “Would you be interested in doing this?” For the remainder of The History of Rome, Audible sponsored two episodes every month, and between that and the donations (which led to the ultimate installation of a button for online contributions), I was able to reduce the number of hours I worked at my full-time job. For the remainder of The History of Rome, I continued to record episodes of the podcast while still maintaining my full-time job.
