Patrick Mahomes Bio, Life and Career:
Patrick Mahomes is an American football quarterback whose full name is Patrick Lavon Mahomes II. He was birth on September 17, 1995, in Tyler, Texas, and quickly rose to prominence as one of the top players in the National Football League (NFL) early in his career. He was named the NFL’s most valuable player (MVP) in his second season as a professional (2018), and he led the Kansas City Chiefs to victory in Super Bowls LIV (2020) and LVII (2023). Mahomes received the NFL Most Valuable Player award for the second time in 2022.
After Mahomes’ mother, who is white, and his father, who is black, divorced when he was six years old, he spent most of his childhood in Tyler, Texas, with his mother.
His father, Pat Mahomes, was a professional baseball pitcher who played 11 seasons in the big leagues with the Minnesota Twins, Boston Red Sox, New York Mets, Texas Rangers, Chicago Cubs, and Pittsburgh Pirates. He was a middle-inning reliever during his time in the major leagues. Young Patrick Mahomes learned how to play baseball from players such as Alex Rodriguez and Derek Jeter, thanks to the fact that he often accompanied his father to the stadium when he was a youngster. His godfather was a former pitcher in the big leagues named LaTroy Hawkins.
Mahomes excelled in three sports when he was a student at Whitehouse High School (near Tyler), and he had already shown in his youth that he was a talented athlete with a powerful throwing arm. He thrived at an even higher level in baseball and football than basketball, where he already stood out as a standout athlete. In his senior year, he had a record of 23–8 and threw a no-hitter with 16 strikeouts with a fastball that traveled at 93 miles per hour. Additionally, he batted.450 on his way to being ranked the number 35 overall prospect in Texas.
During his final year of high school, he started as a quarterback and threw for 4,619 yards and 50 touchdowns while rushing for over 1,000 yards. Mahomes was named Male Athlete of the Year for 2013–2014 by the collegiate sports recruiting website MaxPreps. Mahomes made the decision to play college football at Texas Tech University, which was one of only three Football Bowl Subdivision (FBS) programs that offered him a scholarship (probably because, as a multisport athlete, he had not gained attention by attending any of the elite football camps). Even though the Detroit Tigers selected him in the 37th round of the 2014 Major League Baseball draft, Mahomes chose to play college football there.
After one dismal outing on the mound for the Texas Tech baseball team during his first year, Patrick Mahomes decided to give up playing baseball altogether. The situation was drastically different when it came to football. Mahomes, who is 6 feet 3 inches (1.91 meters) tall and weighs 230 pounds (104 kilograms), had established himself as a top thrower by the time he was a sophomore. He is just the sixth quarterback in FBS history to pass for 4,000 yards and 30 touchdowns while simultaneously rushing for at least 450 yards and ten touchdowns in a single season.
As a junior in 2016, he topped the FBS in passing yardage, throwing for 5,052 yards, and in total yards gained, passing and running for 5,337 yards. As a result of his accomplishments, he was awarded the Sammy Baugh Trophy, which is given to the player considered the finest passer in college football. Mahomes was honored as the Football Scholar-Athlete of the Year by the Big 12 Conference in the same year that he was selected as a second-team Academic All-American by the College Sports Information Directors of America. Mahomes’ concentration in school is marketing, and he is a great student.
Mahomes skipped his senior year of high school and went straight into the 2017 NFL draft, where he was taken by the Kansas City Chiefs with the tenth overall choice in the first round after the Chiefs moved up to get him. Mahomes is now the team’s starting quarterback. Although the Chiefs had high hopes for him (General Manager Brett Veach called him “one of the best players I’ve ever seen”), Patrick Mahomes did not get much playing time during his first season with the team since Alex Smith was the starting quarterback.
Mahomes took over as the starting quarterback after Smith was sent to the Washington Redskins, now known as the Commanders, after the 2017 season. In 2018, he threw for 5,097 yards and 50 touchdowns, becoming the second player in the history of the NFL (after Peyton Manning) to throw for 5,000 yards or more and at least 50 touchdowns in a single season. He more than lived up to the hype around him in that season. With Patrick Mahomes at the head of their dynamic attack, the Chiefs entered the postseason with a record of 12–4.
They proceeded to the American Football Conference (AFC) Championship Game, where the New England Patriots eliminated them under the direction of Tom Brady in overtime and Mahomes’ extremely productive season won him not just a spot on the Pro Bowl and the first-team All-Pro, but also the league’s Most Valuable Player award at 23. Mahomes was out for two games during the Chiefs’ 2019 midseason due to a dislocated kneecap, which forced him to miss both games. Despite this, he led the club to an additional 12–4 record and a repeat participation in the AFC Championship Game.
In this game, he threw three touchdown passes to lead the Chiefs to a 35–24 triumph against the Tennessee Titans and on to their first appearance in the Super Bowl in half a century. Mahomes had a rough start to the Super Bowl LIV, as shown by the fact that he threw two interceptions when his team was behind the San Francisco 49ers by ten points in the second half. In the fourth quarter, though, he was able to alter the tide of the game by tossing touchdown passes on two consecutive drives, ultimately leading the Chiefs to a victory by a score of 31–20.
