Ron Rivera Bio, Life and Career:

Riverboat Rivera” is the nickname given to Ronald Eugene Rivera, birth on January 7, 1962. Rivera is the head coach of the Washington National Football League (NFL) Commanders. In the early 1980s, he pursued his education at the University of California, Berkeley, where he earned All-American linebacker honors for the school’s football team, the Golden Bears. After receiving his diploma, he was selected by the Chicago Bears in the second round of the 1984 NFL Draft.

He went on to play for the Bears for nine seasons, during which time he was a part of the squad that won Super Bowl XX in 1985. Rivera’s coaching career started in 1997 when the Bears hired him to work for them in the quality control coaching position. Two years later, he accepted a position with the Philadelphia Eagles as their linebackers coach. In 2004, he took a position with the Bears as their defensive coordinator. The year after that, the PFWA awarded him the title of Assistant Coach of the Year, and the following year, he was instrumental in linebacker Brian Urlacher’s ascent to the position of Defensive Player of the Year.

The squad competed in Super Bowl XLI in the year 2006, which they won. Rivera also attended interviews for other head coaching positions available around this period. As a linebackers coach, he began his career with the San Diego Chargers in 2007 and was eventually elevated to defensive coordinator the following year.
After serving as head coach for the Chargers for three years, Rivera was appointed the head coach of the Carolina Panthers and became the franchise’s all-time leader in victories.

Rivera was hired as head coach of the Washington team in 2020. In the same year, he was diagnosed with squamous cell carcinoma, but by the beginning of 2021, he was declared cancer-free.

He is the first coach in the history of the NFL to have taken a club to the playoffs with a losing record more than once, having done it with Carolina in 2014 and Washington in 2020, respectively. Rivera attended the University of California, Berkeley on a football scholarship, where he played linebacker for the Golden Bears and was the school’s all-time leader in tackles for the Bears during his three years there. Rivera was recognized for his outstanding play during his final season in 1983 and was awarded several trophies and honors as a result.

In 1988, he was honored as the group’s Man of the Year, and the following year, he was selected as the Ed Block Courage Award winner. Before calling it quits at the end of the 1992 season, he had played for them for nine seasons, during which time he participated in 137 games and had 62 starts.

He finished his career with 7.5 sacks, 392 tackles, five forced fumbles, four fumble recoveries, and nine interceptions. Rivera began his career as a television commentator covering the Bears and college football in 1993 when he started working for WGN-TV and SportsChannel Chicago. In 1997, he became a member of the Bears coaching staff, taking on the defensive quality control coach role. As of 2020, Ron Rivera has held the head coach position for the Washington Commanders of the National Football League (NFL).

Rivera is a football coach in the NFL. The Commanders finished the season with a record of 22-27-1 during this time frame. He served as a head coach for thirteen seasons during his tenure, beginning with the Carolina Panthers. Throughout nine seasons, he coached the Panthers with a record of 76-67-1. He was let go from his position with the Panthers. His second job as head coach was with the Washington Football Club from 2020 to 2023, during which time the club compiled a record of 22-27-1 under his direction.

His two teams finished with a total record of 98-94-2 throughout thirteen seasons, including a postseason record 3-5-0. This was spread out across the whole of his head coaching tenure. Rivera has been recognized as the best coach in the National Football League twice. The most recent of these accolades came in 2015. Rivera led the Panthers to a record of 15-1-0 and a spot in Super Bowl L. During his stint as defensive coordinator and head coach, he was responsible for four players having seasons that earned them awards.
