Since the beginning of his career, he has directed a total of twelve feature films, all of which have been commercially successful. At the time of their respective releases, all three movies held the record for the highest amount of money spent on Indian film production. The film Baahubali 2 is now the greatest-grossing film in India.
During its run at the box office, it sold over 100 million tickets, which is the highest estimated admissions for any film in India since Sholay (1975).On October 10th, 1973, Koduri Srisaila Sri Rajamouli was born into a Telugu family to parents V. Vijayendra Prasad and Raja Nandini. He is known for his work in the film industry. When he was born, his parents were residing in the town of Hirekotikal, which is located in the Raichur region in the state of Mysore. Both of his parents were born in the Indian state of Andhra Pradesh; his father was born in Kovvur, which is located close to Rajahmundry, and his mother was born in Vizag.
His mother was born into the Kapu caste, whereas Rajamouli’s father was born into the Kamma caste. His parents eventually married outside of their castes after meeting one other in Vizag. In order to show his opposition to the caste system, Vijayendra Prasad omitted the letter ‘K’ from the beginning of his name. He believed that the letter was an indication of his caste.
Rajamouli’s parents were ardent worshipers of Lord Shiva. When his mother went to the religious destination of Srisailam, she had a dream that led to the conception of her son. As a result, they gave him the name Srisaila Sri Rajamouli. He only has an older sister, and she was born and raised in Australia. Rajamouli spent his childhood as part of a joint family, which meant that his father and his five brothers all raised their own families under the same roof.
When the railway lines were built through Kovvur, the lands that belonged to Prasad’s family and were located there were taken away. The following year, in 1968, Prasad and his family relocated from Kovvur to Karnataka. Along with his older brother, K. V. Sivashankar, Prasad purchased seven acres of rice fields in the village of Hirekotikal, which is located close to Manvi in the district of Raichur. In 1977, they relocated their entire family to Kovvur.
After completing the fourth grade in Kovvur, Rajamouli moved to Eluru, where he continued his education till completing the first year of the intermediate program there. After that, he took a hiatus of two years and completed the second year of his Intermediate education in Kovvur. After that point, he did not continue his study in any formal capacity.
Rajamouli began his career in film by serving as an apprentice to the seasoned film editor Kotagiri Venkateswara Rao for a period of six months. During this time, Rajamouli worked alongside his mentor. In his recollection, Rajamouli says, “Even when I was in my early 20s, I didn’t know how to plan for my future.” My dad would yell at me all the time for sitting around doing nothing. I wanted to get away from his constant pestering, so I joined the film industry. Gradually, I uncovered a passion inside myself for directing.” A portion of his time in Chennai was spent working at the AVM recording theater.
In addition to that, for a period of time, he served as Kranthi Kumar’s associate director. After that, he worked for his father Vijayendra Prasad as an assistant for a period of six years. He started off writing screenplays for movies, but he was continually dissatisfied with how other directors interpreted and used his stories. His dissatisfaction with the way his writing was being portrayed on screen inspired him to pursue a career in directing so that he could more effectively realize the vision he had as a writer.
After that, he moved from Chennai to Hyderabad and began working with his relative Gunnam Gangaraju. It was from Gunnam Gangaraju that he gained knowledge of the operational aspects of filmmaking. Later on, he directed advertisements with a focus on social messages while working under the tutelage of K. Raghavendra Rao. In addition, he was the director of a few advertisements that were produced for the Telugu Desam Party.
Following that, he collaborated with Vara Mullapudi to direct the Telugu television series Santhi Nivasam for a total of one and a half years. Raghavendra Rao was responsible for the show’s production. It was broadcast on ETV. Because he worked for 17 hours a day during that time, Rajamouli described it as the most difficult period of his life in an interview he gave in 2005.
