Sean Evans Bio, Life, and Career:
Sean Evans is an American YouTuber, interviewer, and producer who was born on April 26, 1986. He is most known for co-creating and hosting the series Hot Ones, in which he interviews celebrities as they eat progressively spicy chicken wings. Evans has over 1.3 million subscribers on his channel. Evans is a native of the Chicago suburb of Evanston and attended Crystal Lake Central High School, where he graduated in 2004. While there, he participated in both football and baseball. He earned a Bachelor of Arts degree in broadcast journalism from the University of Illinois at Urbana–Champaign in 2008, and when he was a student there, one of his professors recommended that he pursue a career in meteorology.
As he was growing up, he admired the skill with which interviewers such as Howard Stern, Jimmy Kimmel, David Letterman, and Adam Corolla conducted their shows. According to him, one of his earliest recollections is of his father taping episodes of Letterman during the week so that they could be seen all at once on the weekend. Evans began his career in the field of interviewing by working as a copywriter for the Chicago tourism board. Later, he began freelancing for Complex Magazine in New Orleans, where he conducted on-screen interviews with celebrities such as 2 Chainz and Steph Curry. Currently, Evans works as an interviewer. Because Complex was impressed with his interviews and offered him a full-time position, he decided to leave his copywriting job and relocate to New York a month later.
Evans is the host of the show Hot Ones, which he and Chris Schonberger, the General Manager of First We Feast, the business owned by Complex Media that produces the show, co-created. The introduction of each episode of Hot Ones begins with Evans reiterating the show’s tagline, which reads, “It’s the show with hot questions and even hotter wings.” On a weekly basis, new episodes are released on Thursdays at 11 am. E.S.T. Evans and Schonberger came up with the concept for Hot Ones at a meeting in which they were pondering new methods to present celebrity interviews. This led to the conception of the show. In a story that was published in Vanity Fair in 2022 about Evans, Schonberger recalled the early conversations that were held regarding a hot-wing interview show as follows: “I just thought it was humorous… Then it was as though we witnessed some sort of sorcery taking place in the room.
Evans and Schonberger came to the conclusion that the idea had an additional benefit, which was that the spicy sauce helped break down the guests’ inhibitions and encouraged them to set aside the typical late-night TV-style talking points. Evans has observed, “You are aware that attaining celebrity status is inherently impossible. But nothing could be a more common guy than passing away from the effects of spicy sauce?” The format of the show involves Evans and his guest consuming 10 chicken wings or vegan replacements, each of which is covered in a new hot sauce that is spicier than the one that came before it. Each episode of the show routinely receives millions of views on YouTube.
The lineup of hot sauces featured on the show is updated for each new season, with the exception of the eighth wing (named “Da Bomb Beyond Insanity”) and the tenth wing (The Last Dab, a sauce created by Hot Ones and the Brooklyn-based hot sauce company Heatonist). The habit of Evans and his guest “dabbing” each final wing with an additional dollop of the show’s namesake sauce is referred to as “the last dab,” and the term “the last dab” alludes to this tradition. Evans has conducted interviews with a large number of famous people, some of whom are listed below: Shaquille O’Neal, Ed Sheeran, Justin Timberlake, Cate Blanchett, Billie Eilish, Matt Damon, Kevin Hart, Kristen Stewart, Gordon Ramsay, Post Malone, Dua Lipa, Neil deGrasse Tyson, Scarlett Johansson, Noel Gallagher, Salma Hayek, and Jimmy Kimmel.
