Adam Arkin Bio, Life and Career:

Adam Arkin is an American actor and director who works in film, television, and the theater. He was born on August 19, 1956. On the television show Chicago Hope, he portrayed the part of Aaron Shutt. On the television show Monk, he is also one of the three actors that play the role of Dale “The Whale” Biederbeck. Since the year 2007, he has been starring in the NBC program Life. On the original Sons of Anarchy series that aired on FX in 2009, he played the role of the antagonist Ethan Zobelle, a white separatist gang leader.

He is the son of Alan Arkin, an actor who won an Academy Award. In the television series Chicago Hope, which ran from 1994 to 2000, he played the role of neurologist Dr. Aaron Shutt and also directed the show. More than 40 movies have been credited to him. Films include A Slight Case of Murder (1990) and Hanging Up (2000), as well as Wrestling Ernest Hemingway, The Doctor, Baseball, Personal Foul, Halloween: H20, and Under the Rainbow. Other films include Halloween: H20 and Under the Rainbow.

Arkin’s first performance on Broadway, as Gary Peter Lefkowitz in I Hate Hamlet, earned him a nomination for a Tony Award in 1991. This was Arkin’s first appearance on Broadway. His other theater credits include the critically acclaimed revival of Guys and Dolls on Broadway, as well as the off-Broadway productions of Sight Unseen and Four Dogs and a Bone.

In addition, he appeared in the Wendy Wasserstein workshop production of An American Daughter at the Seattle Repertory Theatre, playing the role opposite Meryl Streep. In addition to playing leading roles on television shows such as “Busting Loose” (1977) and “Big Wave,” he also had a career in film. Arkin has been nominated for an Emmy Award for his supporting performances on Northern Exposure and Chicago Hope in addition to his nomination for Dave’s (1993).

Arkin has appeared in a number of popular television shows, including A Year in the Life, Picket Fences, China Beach, L.A. Law, St. Elsewhere, and Law & Order, as well as the telefilms Not in This Town and In the Line of Duty: Hunt for Justice. Arkin is credited for a wide variety of guest roles. On the 200th episode of Fraiser, which aired in November 2001, he portrayed the role of a “obsessed fan.”

This is funny to me because I am an avid… well, “passionate” fan of Northern Exposure. On the television series Monk, which he also directed, he appeared as a very huge guy in the year 2002 under the name Dale the Whale. Arkin has participated in a variety of projects as a voice actor and narrator, such as TV Land Moguls, Horatio’s Drive: America’s First Road Trip, and Lewis & Clark: The Journey of the Corps of Discovery.

Arkin made his debut on Broadway once more in January 2005, this time as the lead role in the play Brooklyn Boy. Because of his performance in the role, he was nominated for a Drama Desk Award for Best Lead Actor. Bill Irwin, who played Enrico ‘Bob’ Bellati in “Who’s Afraid of Virginia Woolf?,” and fellow NoEx alum John Cullum, who played Holling, were both nominated in this category for their respective roles in “Who’s Afraid of Virginia Woolf?” and “Sin: A Cardinal Disposed,” respectively.

In 2005, he made an appearance in the film Marilynn Hotchkiss’ Ballroom Dancing and Charm School, which was shown at the Sundance Film Festival. In Ken Burns’ documentary Unforgiveable Blackness, Arkin’s voice can be heard, along with the voice of fellow NoEx cast member John Cullum. The film was shown for the first time on January 17 and 18, 2005. In television, you may catch him playing the recurring part of Principal Ed Gibb on the show 8 Simple Rules.

In addition, he will be seen in the films Marilyn Hotchkiss’ Ballroom Dancing and Charm School, Hitch, and Kids in America, all of which will be released in 2005. In 2006, he appeared on the television shows Boston Legal and Commander-in-Chief in a number of recurring roles. Arkin is scheduled to give a reading as part of the South Coast Repertory Pacific Playwright’s Festival in May of 2007. Arkin is still active in the field of film direction, having most recently helmed episodes of the television shows Grey’s Anatomy and Boston Legal.

Arkin appears in the documentary “The War” that Ken Burns directed. The series that focuses on World War II is now available on DVD. Arkin was a guest star on the NBC series Life, which lasted for two seasons before being canceled. On DVD, you can get both the first and second seasons of this show. In addition to that, he has directed quite a few productions.

Arkin will make a guest appearance in an upcoming episode of Sons of Anarchy, which will air on FX in the fall of 2009. Just Peck, a film directed by the Coen Brothers, and Summer Eleven, in which he will reteam with Eve, are some of the next films that he will be appearing in (Valerie Mahaffey).
