Auston Matthews Biography

The National Hockey League’s Toronto Maple Leafs’ alternate captain and American professional ice hockey centre Auston Taylour Matthews was born on September 17, 1997. (NHL). Matthews was born in San Ramon, California, and his family relocated to Scottsdale, Arizona, when he was a little child.

He played hockey and baseball as a kid, and after watching the Arizona Coyotes play, he became particularly interested in the sport. Before being selected by the NHL in 2016 and playing for the ZSC Lions of the Swiss National League, Matthews was a product of the USA Hockey National Team Development Program in the United States Hockey League (USHL).

That same year, he won the Swiss Cup. The Toronto Maple Leafs selected Matthews first overall because he was largely regarded as the best prospect in the draught.Matthews made NHL history by becoming the first player to ever score four goals in a single game. He became just the second rookie since the 2004–05 lockout to reach the milestone (together with Alexander Ovechkin) and set the Maple Leafs rookie record with 40 goals in 2016–17.

He is also just the fourth teenage player in league history to accomplish the feat. He received the Calder Memorial Trophy for the season’s best rookie in the NHL thanks to his accomplishments. Matthews was the league’s top scorer in 2020–21 with 41 goals in 52 games, earning him the Maurice “Rocket” Richard Trophy.

In 2021–22, Matthews broke records for the most goals scored by an American-born player and a Maple Leaf in a single season, hit the 60-goal plateau for the first time, and won the Rocket Richard Trophy for the second consecutive year.

The Hart Trophy for Most Valuable Player and the Ted Lindsay Award for Most Outstanding Player were both given to him.Matthews has competed for the United States in a number of international events, including the U17 World Hockey Challenge, two U18 World Championships, two U20 World Championships, and one IIHF World Championship.

In San Ramon, California, Auston Taylour Matthews was born. to Ema, who is from Hermosillo, Mexico, and Brian, who is from California. He relocated to Scottsdale, Arizona with his family when he was two months old  and started going to Phoenix Coyotes games when he was two.

Shane Doan and Daniel Brière were two of his favourite athletes to watch.  Matthews first showed little enthusiasm for the game but was entranced by the Zamboni that was used to clean the ice during the breaks. He started expressing an interest in hockey shortly after turning five and joined the Arizona Bobcats minor hockey team.

Matthews, who was eight years old at the time, saw Alexander Ovechkin score the infamous goal that would become known simply as “The Goal” on January 16, 2006, while lying on his back after being tripped by the Coyotes’ defence. Matthews was present at the game between the Coyotes and Washington Capitals.

The goal was described as “possibly one of the best goals ever” by Matthews in an interview from 2016. Matthews played baseball and hockey when he was little. His father claimed that baseball was Auston’s finest sport, and that he was a great hitter due to his superb hand-eye coordination. Matthews didn’t enjoy baseball’s deliberate pace, so he decided to seek a career in hockey instead.

His parents knew very little about hockey when he first began playing.  During his formative years, Boris Dorozhenko, who had previously developed Mexico’s national ice hockey programme, served as his primary coach. Dorozhenko resided with Matthews and his parents during his initial years in the country.

Matthews competed with the Kharkov minor ice hockey club in the 2010 Quebec International Pee-Wee Hockey Tournament. Matthews was appointed an alternate captain for the Maple Leafs at the start of the 2019–20 campaign.

Auston Matthews Career

On October 3, he defeated the Ottawa Senators in the NHL’s regular-season opening, scoring twice to become the fourth player in NHL history to score in each of the league’s first four seasons.  As of that game, Matthews had 116 goals in 215 games since making his NHL debut in 2016, which placed him third overall.

On October 7, Matthews had the honour of being named the third NHL Star of the Week. He was then selected for his fourth consecutive All-Star game, but Brady Tkachuk of the Senators took his spot because he was unable to attend the festivities due to a “ongoing wrist ailment.”

With career highs in goals (47) and points (63), Matthews would conclude the shortened regular season (80). He finished the season with 47 goals, one less than David Pastrák and Alexander Ovechkin for the league lead. Matthews and the Leafs were let down by the end of the season after losing to the Columbus Blue Jackets in a best-of-five qualifying match.

In the five-game series, Matthews scored twice, including the game-winning goal in overtime to cap off an unlikely three-goal rally in the final five minutes of Game 4. In a 7-3 Maple Leafs victory over the Winnipeg Jets on March 31, 2022, Matthews scored an empty-net goal to reach 50 goals for the first time in his career.

He was the first Maple Leafs player to accomplish this since Dave Andreychuk in the 1993–1994 season, making him just the fourth player overall to do it. He also established a team record for the fewest games required to score 50 points, doing so in just 62.

A few days later, on April 4, Matthews tied Rick Vaive’s franchise mark most goals in a season (54), established in 1981–1982, by scoring his seventh hat-trick of his career against the Tampa Bay Lightning. Since Steven Stamkos, the captain of the Lightning, scored 60 goals in 2011–12, this was also the NHL player with the highest single-season goal total.

His scoring streak persisted, and on April 7 against the Dallas Stars, he not only broke Vaive’s record with his 55th goal of the year in the second period but also established a new NHL record for the most goals scored by a player born in the United States in a single season when he scored the game-winning goal in overtime, breaking the mark previously held by Jimmy Carson and Kevin Stevens.

He scored his 57th and 58th goals of the season in his next game on April 9 against the Montreal Canadiens, passing Frank Mahovlich for the most even-strength goals by a Maple Leaf in a season. He also became the first player to score 51 goals in a span of 50 games since Mario Lemieux accomplished the feat in the 1995–96 season.

On April 14, he achieved 100 points in a single season for the first time in his career. On April 26, Matthews scored goals 59 and 60 in a contest against the Detroit Red Wings. Along with Stamkos and Alexander Ovechkin, who set the current record with 65 goals, he became the first Leafs player in franchise history to score 60 goals in a season and just the third player in the NHL’s post-lockout era to reach that milestone.

With this, he joined Pavel Bure and Ovechkin as the only players to win the Rocket Richard Trophy twice in a row.  Later, Matthews was selected a finalist for both the Ted Lindsay Award and the Hart Memorial Trophy for the third consecutive year and the third time in a row.

He received 119 Hart first-place votes to Connor McDavid’s 29, winning both trophies. He was the first Leafs athlete to win the Lindsay and the third in 67 years to win the Hart. Matthews and the Toronto Maple Leafs were drawn in the first round of the Stanley Cup playoffs to play the Tampa Bay Lightning, the two-time defending champions. The Leafs lost their eighth straight playoff series against the Lightning after a seven-game series.
