Ben Wikler Bio, Life and Career:
Ben Wikler and his family of five (wife Beth and their three kids) have made their home in Madison, Wis. since he was a child. Ben has dedicated his life to the pursuit of social, economic, and racial equity. Ben has been a leader in some of the most important political battles in recent years, including the victorious struggle to defend the Affordable Care Act and Medicaid, the defence of Dreamers, immigrants, and refugees, and the development of the Blue Wave in 2018.
Ben has worked all around the country, but he has never forgotten his home state of Wisconsin, most notably campaigning for the Evers/Barnes ticket and then warning about the GOP’s attempt to seize control in the state after they were elected. He’s running for chair of the Wisconsin Democratic Party because, with your help, we can galvanise support for our progressive platform across the state, defeat Trump, and win big in 2020 and beyond.
In the years that followed, Ben advocated on a national scale for causes like climate change, peace, and human rights. He kept making trips back to Wisconsin to lend a hand in pivotal battles, including the Act 10 protests and door-to-door canvassing in 2016. Working closely with the Obama administration, acting as a surrogate for Bernie Sanders, and raising millions of dollars for grassroots organising to support Hillary Clinton were all responsibilities of Ben’s while serving as director of MoveOn in Washington, DC. Since Trump’s election, he has devoted himself fully to fending against right-wing attacks on our neighbourhoods, ending GOP control of the government, and promoting progressive principles.
He spearheaded the group’s drive to get Elizabeth Warren on the ballot, which put him at differences with his buddy and fellow progressive Howard Dean, who backed Hillary Clinton. I appreciate you attempting to pick a conflict between Ben and me, Dean said, declining to condemn the effort or Wikler. I know Ben personally, and he is one of the country’s brightest young minds.
Wikler launched his bid for DPW chair on February 21, 2019, along with Felicia Martin and Lee Snodgrass. Wikler was officially named DPW chair on June 2, 2019. His opponent, state Representative David Bowen, received 233 votes, making his final tally 1,006.
Wikler has said since taking office, “Wisconsin is not just a necessary state, but may be the necessary state to stop Trump and elect a Democratic president.” Furthermore, he has emphasised DPW’s commitment to grassroots organising, saying, “Unlike almost any other state party in the country, we have a field team of organisers working across Wisconsin to develop neighbourhood teams and coordinate with county parties to get volunteers out on doors.” As of Wednesday, September 4th, 2019, DPW has 13 field organisers spread over the whole state.
Grassroots protests organised by Wikler in 2017 against the American Health Care Act’s attempt to repeal the Affordable Care Act contributed to the bill’s eventual defeat in the Senate. Wikler’s show was rebranded as The Good Fight, a podcast and radio show supported by MoveOn.org, in November 2013. The premiere episode, which featured Senator Al Franken, topped the iTunes podcast charts in the United States.
After joining Avaaz in March 2007, he took on the role of Campaign Director, where he was instrumental in expanding the group’s membership to more than 10 million people. Campaigns he oversaw focused on topics such as global warming, poverty, and human rights, and he also oversaw the organization’s information technology and public relations departments. On behalf of the Climate Action Network, he emceed the annual Fossil of the Day Awards ceremony during the United Nations climate discussions from 2007 to 2009. Wikler was promoted to the position of Executive Vice President of Change.org in the latter half of 2011.
At Harvard University, he studied economics beginning in 1999. He helped establish the Harvard University HIV/AIDS Awareness Coalition and the Student Global AIDS Campaign (SGAC) while still a student. As the SGAC’s representative, he attended the UN General Assembly Special Session on AIDS in New York, the UN World Youth Forum in Senegal, and the International AIDS Conference in Barcelona. He has done internships with both Russ Feingold and economist Jeffrey Sachs. In addition to his work for The Onion, he was the editor-in-chief of the Harvard Review of Philosophy.
